Great Service

I used NRG Clean Energy to install my solar system two years ago and they did an excellent job. Very professional, great communications, explained options very well. This year I decided to add two more storage batteries to my system. I was having trouble getting good information until I reached out for a second time to sales agent Sabrina Steinman. She listened to my unusual needs and came up with alternative approaches and how to evaluate the. She also went the extra mile to get me a good price as a returning customer. I have nothing but good things to say about NRG Clean Energy and Sabrina.

Would not recommend if you are on a schedule, mind sub-contract

Would not recommend if you are on a schedule, or depend on rebates - you pay a lot and I still had to manage and push the project (barely made Tax deadline, missed a 6.5k/battery rebate) —— Found NRG Clean Power (LA based, supposedly office in San Jose near me) through EnergySage. Had the lowest quote of 7, but the only one that didn’t include a gateway for solar+batteries (Tesla Powerwall 3) so red flag #1, red flag #2 is they sub-contract the install (not great in my case). Their sale Stephania was amazing and did a great design trying to fit as many panels as possible on my best facing roof (unlike Tesla, still cheaper, who put all panels on the worst NE facing roof even after push back and onsite visit payment - avoid them like the plague). Told me I was eligible for 13k SGIP PGE rebate (only got 11k) so signed contract in end July. Well that when things started going wrong. I didn’t get initial (bad) design for 10 weeks after onsite visit, after repeated ask. Tons of errors, and things like putting all house backup switch (with 120A full wiring loop) 100+ft away instead of right next to service! Even installer couldn’t believe 30-40ft re-design and put it right next to meter. Duh. I was told normally 5 months (so should fit by Dec 31st Tax deadline) but expected less since a) already had their panel layout b) had a complete design from Tesla c) my city does very fast permit in 1-2 weeks. Another red flag is they sub-contract the install (who sub-subcontracted the solar panels - thankfully more knowledgeable). Due to late night rush install, 1 set of wire was incorrect causing 1/3 production loss. Being en engineer I noticed that issue in TeslaOne app next day (they never verified system) and it took them 6+ weeks to finally correct it (main sub are not good). NRG sat on my permit for 4 weeks (took my city under 2). I pushed and pushed and still just barely made the deadline - my system was installed on Dec 27th only because my inspection was on 28th - really rushed job when they had 5 months to ‘design’ and 2 weeks permit wait. Then they took time to ask for PGE PTO after install, who also dragged their feet for couple months (just got conditional PTO), so I MISSED an additional 6.5k/battery rebate from 3CE by just 2 weeks!!!! I couldn’t believe it. So pissed and stressful for the last 8 months I would have been better getting owners permits, save a ton even if I can’t apply for SGIP rebate. Lesson learned. Sales was also not correct in quoting 13k SGIP rebate (battery portion - 30% fed x 70%) and wouldn’t correct. Another 2k lost.

Great process

My solar system was just installed, and I couldn't be happier with the entire experience. I first began working with NRG back in April, and over the past few months they designed, installed, and obtained PTO for my system. The entire process was seamless from start to finish. Everyone I worked with was incredibly helpful and professional. My installation was scheduled quickly, the crew did an outstanding job, and everything went smoother than I could have expected. I especially want to thank Alberto, our Installation Coordinator, for all of his hard work and communication throughout the project. He was always available to answer questions, kept us updated every step of the way, and made the entire process stress-free. I highly recommend NRG to anyone considering going solar!

I just bought a house with solar. The monitor system was not working properly ( would not connect to WiFi). After a lengthy investigation involving a couple solar companies, I discovered that my system had been installed by NRG Clean Power I sent, on the NRG website , a request for information. The time was around 5pm PDT. After a very short time I received a text from Jonathan who wished to make an appointment for the following morning. I was impressed and advised that I would be available. However, to my surprise, I received a phone call from Daniel at NRG about 15 minutes later. He advised that he was able to assist me immediately and had discussed my case with Jonathan. Daniel was friendly, informed, and eager to please He told me we could fix the issue now and told me how. He also texted me the information. I followed his instructions and the problem was resolved immediately (Note: Jonathan also followed up with me as promised). I am very grateful for such solid service, by HUMANS, in this day of automation. Jonathan and Daniel are focused on great customer service and displayed a true understanding of Teamwork! I highly recommend NRG Clean Power to anyone who wants assurance that their installer will “have their back”

Outstanding Solar Company!

If you're looking to get solar set up, NRG is the place to go! We had an amazing overall experience. We've already recommended them to multiple friends. I truly believe this is one of the best solar companies out there. My wife and I finally decided to pull the trigger on solar last June. Right from the start, we had an amazing experience while chatting with Frankie. He was able to answer all of our questions and he walked us through all the different options available to us. Once we began the process, NRG was always on top of it. Our installation manager, Nicole, was absolutely stellar! She always kept us in the loop as to where we stood in the process and what the next steps were. Also, she was always available to address any of our concerns. She's a coordination wizard and we're not sure how she does it, honestly. The roofing and panel installation crews were top notch. The work was impeccably clean -- so much so that the city inspector commented on how nice the install was when he came to approve everything (and he sees a lot of installs). The other great thing about NRG was that they took the reigns on all of the rebates. They knew which ones we could utilize to save some money and filled out / applied for them for us, which was awesome because a lot of those rebates ask specific questions about the system and its production stats. Most importantly, NRG never felt pushy. At no point did we feel like they were trying to upsell us or push us into anything. It always felt super professional and their experience in the industry was clear. The only disappointment we had was with the city permitting offices and not NRG. We were hoping to get everything set up to take advantage of the solar tax credit before it disappeared. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, but it wasn't due to NRG. The permitting office was holding everything up and the process of getting the permits approved took way longer than normal. The combination of a massive influx of people trying to get solar installed before the tax credit was gone, and the political landscape of tariffs and international products coming into the country at that time, was a perfect storm for a huge delay that put us past the cut-off date.

I purchased solar from another company who filed BK and eventually closed. My solar hasn't worked properly for some time. I did however receive a quote to "fix" my solar before they closed. I've driven past NRG so many times and thought I'd give them a call to see what they could do for me. I spoke to Shelley. She was helpful and sympathetic. She listened! She walked me through step-by-step instructions on how to reboot my system. She was knowledgeable, personable, friendly and helpful. My solar is back online and working. It didn't cost me a dime. I've heard so many of the solar companies are "fly-by-night" and jump on the bandwagon only to fold. NRG IS THE REAL DEAL FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!

In terms of the entire project representative of NGR contacted me in terms of what are house roof design was, electrical panels, and did a complete aerial photography of our roof area for panel installation. They also look for correct spacing for the solar panels and electrical boxes. They recommended the entire system for an East West exposure. correct spacing for the solar panels and electrical boxes. Shelley is Amazing

My mom's system started throwing errors in July 2025. When I arrived in September, Mom still wasn't sure who to contact and didn't have the original install paperwork. Through some deductive work, I found out NRG coordinated her original solar installation. Luck was with me when Shelley was assigned as my customer contact (on Mom's behalf). She worked with me to do owner on site troubleshooting, and when our initial reset options didn't work long term, she was able to find solutions within Mom's budget to not only get the system up and running, but working better than it had in years. She is absolutely the first person I will reach out to if Mom has any solar issues in the future. I cannot recommend her enough.

Solar reinstall on metal roof

The solar removal and reinstall for my roofing project went smoothly thanks to Shelley. She was on top of the logistics from the start, coordinating a skilled crew that handled the transition from asphalt to a standing seam metal roof without any issues. Shelley was very flexible with the scheduling when my roofing timeline shifted due to rain and she made sure we had the right hardware ready to go. The pricing was fair for the extra labor a metal roof requires, and the city inspector was impressed with the final install. If you’re doing a solar-plus-roof project, Shelley is the PM you want managing it.

Worst experience i have had as a homeowner

This was the worst experience i have had working with a contractor as a homeowner. There were problems from the start, and yet I stuck with NRG because i wanted to get finished in time for the expiring federal tax credit. Installation team: After the initial work, they left the house having disconnected wiring to lighting for a stairway in my home. Even though this was a safety hazard, they took more than a week to even return to take a look at it. They failed fire inspection FIVE TIMES. They were a constant source of frustration and required coming to my house at least four times as often as would have been necessary, due entirely to incompetence. Installation Coordinator: I worked with two. The first did absolutely nothing, for months, then quit. This cost me thousands of dollars in missing the deadline for the federal tax credit. The second, while he attempted to do his job, was totally ineffective at getting the installation team move faster, to fix their mistakes, or to do things correctly the first time. His responses to my concerns were patronizing platitudes. Planning: They over-estimated the size system that could be installed. They were not familiar with local county requirements.

Very bad

This was the worst experience I have had with a vendor. I ordered my system 12/9/2024. It was not installed and functional until 12/31/2025. You should be very careful to understand their rating. Understand that about 10% of the time people are not pleased. Do you want to risk a project of this size with 10% odds of it going poorly? It is hard to describe everything that went wrong over the course of more than a year. Here is some of the summary: 1. The engineering process has a lot of people who do not actually understand the rules. deciding how things would be laid out on our house wall was difficult, and then when the installers arrived, they said the design would not work. 2. They never are proactive. The only way for things to move forward is to email and call. As an example, today I got a Permission to Operate Granted email from them. I received the email from SCE over a week ago. They then give many instructions on what to do. It is a lot to read, and buried in there is the most important instruction to go in the Tesla app and flip the permission to export switch. You have to learn and figure everything out on your own. If you don't do this, you are literally losing money. 3. They tried to get me to sign up for the SGIP program saying it was just free money. This is simply not true. SCE does not give money away for free. I was educating them on the system and the costs to the end user. 4. They sent a survey where I complained. They have never responded. 5. Once my design was completed and they got a $14K payment. Right after they told me they could not get batteries for 4-6 months. 6. We tried changing to a different manufacturer (Tesla to Enphase) to speed things up. They sold me a system that SCE had not approved and could not be installed. We had to revert back. 7. The initial battery sizing was so far off we had to double the capacity. I wanted to be able to run through the night on batteries. This was not possible with one battery. 8. We finally got City approval for the system, and it took another 3 weeks just to get an install date. 9. I referred a friend at the beginning of the relationship. You are supposed to be compensated if you do this. They have never paid me. I can go on and on. They are all nice enough people, but the systems and processes that NRG have are truly terrible. You might get lucky, you might not.

This project was started in 2020. The first part of the installation was smooth. Unfortunately for us, the system only backed up four circuits. We asked what it would take to power the entire residence and were told we needed more storage, another battery. The current LG battery was not compatible with the new system, twoTesla batteries that NRG engineers said we needed. NRG's technician came to install the Tesla batteries and in the process the LG battery was damaged. The technician could not get the system to work, and he quit the job and left, leaving us without a working system. NRG hired at least 3 different technicians to diagnose and fix the problem, with no success. NRG called Humboldt Solar, and they correctly diagnosed the problem. The LG battery had to be replaced, along with the inverter and associated hardware. After more than a year without a solar array, Humboldt Solar was able to get the system on line and working properly. During the time we were without a working system we were still paying on the loan and the utility bill. NRG gave us a $250 gift certificate for our inconvenience. I would like to give Bill Russell (bill.r@nrgcleanpower.com) 5 stars for his help in securing a PG&E.rebate.

Only go with NRG if you are willing to wait

I chose NRG after evaluating multiple bids. They seemed like a competent company and the sales rep was knowledgeable. Also, their pricing was competitive. But 5 months into my solar installation, I wish I’d gone with a single local contractor, even though it might have been more expensive. NRG’s system of handing things off from department to department means that you have to reeducate ~8 different people on your project. If one thing goes wrong (in my case, the permitting department applied to the wrong office, even after I told them the right one), it will delay your project for months. I have had to send dozens of emails following up to move the project along and get simple issues fixed. The 3rd party installers are a crap shoot, and if there’s any problems on the installation it will take weeks to fix. I would recommend using someone local and single sourced, even if it’s a bit more expensive

When we went with NRG for our solar installation, we started with a coordinator who helped us begin the process. A few weeks in, I was told that she would no longer be assisting us. I reached out to NRG and was informed that Aracely would be our new contact. I am sure that she was very busy taking on additional customers and challenges along with her normal workload. However, Aracely really stepped up and became very attentive to our installation. At one point, it looked like my install was moving very slowly. When I asked Aracely about it, she explained that the city I live in had not yet approved the permits. After waiting several weeks, I checked with the city myself and confirmed that NRG had submitted the permits when they said they did — the city’s permit inspector was just behind schedule. Once the permits were finally approved, everything started moving quickly again. Aracely stayed on top of getting the parts ordered and the installation crew scheduled promptly. She kept me informed and up to date on every step of the process. All in all, I’m very happy with NRG and feel that Aracely went above and beyond my expectations in the way she handled our solar installation. We went with the Enphase 7.56 kW setup with three 5 kW backup batteries, and everything is working great so far. I would recommend NRG for any Solar installation.

My Solar Company Folded!!!

Imagine my dismay when my Solar Edge solar inverter started to malfunction after 3 years.  I immediately tried to call the solar company that installed my system, only to find that all their phone numbers were disconnected.  Luckily, I had ONE phone number from the installation supervisor.  That person told me my company, Green Day, was out of business.  I didn't know what to do, so I called several companies to find anyone who might be willing to help me.  Whoot Whoot!  I found Shelley of NRG Clean Power.  She has been tremendously helpful and was able to fix most of my issues over the phone.  There is still one thing going on, however, she is watching it from her end.  I can not thank Shelley enough for all of the time she has spent helping me and teaching me how to reset my Solar Edge properly.  If you no longer have a solar company to fulfill their warranty, call Shelley.  The parts are still covered.  Labor is not, but I am willing to pay as necessary.  Their prices were competitive, and she was willing to try things over the phone before she sent someone out. Shelley is an angel, and I appreciate all that she has done.  I know that Shelley will be there for us if we have issues with our solar, unlike the company that left us high and dry!  Give NRG Clean Power a call to see if they can help you!  You won't be disappointed!

Solar installations with panel upgrade and EV plug

Company had a competitive price with good panels and microinverters. Needed a small panel upgrade and decided to add EV plugs for future electric car purchase. NRG agreed to take care of it all. On the day of the install, the electrician for the company did a no show and SDG&E needed them present to shut off power but they agreed to come back in a couple hours. One of the crew for the install showed up later and had qualifications to do electrical work so when SDG&E came back we were able to get going without the electrician that was supposed to be there. Installers needed electrical access for their tools but I had none because of the shut off for the install. Thankfully I have nice neighbors and allowed the company to run an extension cord. Install progressed but they installed the new main electrical panel too high and the inspector made them add a concrete pad/step below the panel. Pad makes accessing my back yard difficult. System was completed on time and activated shortly after. Solar system has been working well for a couple years. I recently bought an EV car but when I started charging it using the installed plug there was overheating issues with the plug. I contacted the company and they got back to me quickly but because the EV plug was only warrantied for a year it was not covered. NRG offered to send someone out to look at and assess what needed to be fixed for a $400 inspection fee. I passed and will now need to search electrical companies in San Diego for estimates to fix the electrical issues with the EV plug.

Incompitent and unknowlegable about this field

You really got to watch these people. The people I talked to where not knowledgeable and where adding equipment to the contract after it was agreed upon. After bringing this to the managers attention he was able to correct this but sent me back to the same associate to further ignore my needs. Also did not pay attention to my needs or setup I was looking for. After informing them on more than one occasion that I needed a whole home backup I was still trying to be contracted for partial backup. I informed them of my current setup and the soft start system I had on my AC unit as well as informed them of the whole home generac system and solar system I already had. I was only looking for a battery to keep my solar panels from going down in the event of a blackout. I also was looking to stay within the enphase eco system. Even adding a single battery within the same eco system proved to be just to challenging for them. I would truly hate to see the fumbling that would occur if I trusted these people with a whole system install. User beware but definitely watch your back with these people for sure. I only asked for one battery as I already had one installed. And was looking to take some run time off of my generator which i made them aware of.

The 3-payment schedule is unthinkable great. I made the second payment after receiving all materials. The panels generate so much juice and I need to add one more Powerwall 3 battery which has built-in inverters. NRG provides an iPhone app with 9 stages. Each stage has a project manager with a large pool of resources. Every person in NRG is more than eager to make customer happy and satisfied. I'm extremely happy and completely satisfied with is solar project. Best of all, I'm almost off the grid and saving hundreds each month. P.S. An EV is charged daily.
