Hotlanta Goes 100% Wind Power With Budweiser During Super Bowl Week
Atlanta, home to Super Bowl LII, will be powered by 100 percent renewable wind energy—for the whole week!—thanks to a donation from Budweiser. Super Bowls in the past have been powered by renewable energy, some of it generated by systems at the stadiums themselves, but powering the whole host city for a week through a donation is new.
Then again, it could be anticipated. After all, Anheuser-Busch InBev is a member of the RE 100 group and has committed to 100 percent renewable energy. At the same time Atlanta has joined the Mayors For 100% Clean Energy campaign and plans to be 100 percent powered by clean energy by at least 2035.
“As a member of RE100, Anheuser-Busch is committed to sourcing 100 percent renewable electricity. We are thrilled the company is spotlighting this to its consumers during the Super Bowl,” said Amy Davidsen, executive director of The Climate Group in North America. “It’s exciting to see Budweiser partner with Atlanta to power the city with renewables, too. By working together to drive down emissions, businesses and local governments can accelerate the clean energy transition around the world.”
The stadium itself, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium also is powered by renewable energy. It’s powered by more than 4,000 solar panels, roughly 1.3 megawatts. It’s not the first time a solar-powered football stadium has hosted the Super Bowl, either. Since at least 2014 most of the Super Bowl stadiums have had solar or were powered by renewable energy.
Budweiser is celebrating the Super Bowl and its commitment to renewable energy and the Super Bowl with its “Wind Never Felt Better” ad campaign featuring Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.”
“Super Bowl is one of the most exciting times of the year for our team, and people all over the country. Those who wait for the best commercials all year expect Budweiser to show up big, and we felt there was no better way to show up this year than to talk about our commitment to Renewable Electricity,” said Vice President of Marketing Core & Value brands at Anheuser-Busch Ricardo Marques. “We are proud to be the first Anheuser-Busch brand and the first major beer brand to be brewed with 100% renewable electricity from wind power and hopefully we can use this moment to inspire others in our pursuit for a more sustainable future.”
