Good product - Bad communication

The Good - Had panels installed in 2016 and was very happy. Greatly reduced my electric bill, looked great and worked as they should. Loved the individual inverters and the fact the connections ran through the roof rather then down the side of the house. The $32 K price tag was not the cheapest of the companies I got quotes from, but I liked the product and they were reputable. The Bad - When installing the panels I informed the salesman I would need to replace my roof in 5-10 years. He said no problem, happens all the time - for $500 they would remove, store & replace the panels after the roof was installed. When the time came to replace my roof, Kasselman said this should have had that written in my contract and it would actually cost me $2000 to have them removed, store them on my property and replaced. I already had my roofers scheduled, so it was either use Kasselman or forfeit the remainder of my warrantee. The Ugly -Terrible service! first they left all the mounting hardware in the middle of my yard 3 days before Easter. Screws, bolts, wirecaps all thrown around for me to pick up so my dogs could use the yard safely. They would make appointments to reinstall the panels then not show up. It took a letter to the company president to finally get a crew to come and install my panels and then - THEY PUT THEM IN THE WRONG SPOT! We live in a log cabin so aesthetics were a big factor in the panels we chose. when they replaced the panels instead of centering them like they were, they placed them in the far left corner making the house look lop sided. They offered to fix it but the thought of having a few hundred extra holes in my brand new $20K roof talked me out of that. It is obvious to me the profit margin was not great enough for them to take my project seriously.

Response from Kasselman Solar

Thank you for writing this review and letting us know about about this experience with us. Upon doing some research into this over the past 24 hours I do see we did not charge you the current rates we should have and charged you the $500 due to these issues you have presented. This is something we did do in the past, however it needed to be apart of the agreement and prepaid in order to be honored. I cannot speak for what was told to you back in 2016, but we also have not been doing this program for the past 3 years. Ultimately, I am happy that you were only charged the $500 as requested. Regarding the incorrect placement on the roof, I cannot apologize enough for that. Your initial site plan showed the placement as we reinstalled it. It seems that your system layout was changed after the initial site plan was sent to you and our team did not correctly record the original placement after removing it which resulted in a miscommunication when re-installing. This past year has been difficult for many people including us. We have had labor shortages, especially during the time period this happened, in April, and are doing our best to help everyone. Should we have contacted you to reschedule instead of not showing up? Absolutely. This is something I spoke with my COO about after reading your review yesterday and we are ensuring this never happens again. Leaving screws, bolts, and wire caps all thrown around on your yard is something that is a complete shock for me. We all take pride in what we do here and am at a loss of words as to why or how we can leave a site and deem that appropriate. Yes, sometimes a screw is missed from the magnetic sweep, but I already addressed items being “thrown around the yard” with the installation Teams. It doesn’t matter if it’s a no profit project or not, it’s obvious to me that if we didn't conduct ourselves and our workmanship in the highest level, we will get reviews like this and ultimately that hurts our reputation. Again I want to thank you for sending this review. Without reviews like this, I do not know where we went wrong, and what changes to implement and make. Ultimately I firmly believe it’s how you treat existing clients after their install which is a true testament to a company. We didn’t do everything perfect and did a lot wrong with your scenario, something that doesn’t happen frequently. We truly appreciate your business though, and moving forward we assure you any future service will be done to a high standard that we hold ourselves to. Thank you for this valuable feedback and enjoy your day.

Poor communication. Misleading

I was really disappointed with the communication. The person that worked on my project mislead me 1x. That was not necessary. He had me believe we was at one step when we wasn’t. I realized I was mislead because he told me a different story a few days later. Things weren’t being done in a respectable time frame. I had to continuously call send emails in order to get things moving. We were stuck on roof weight load for more then a month. It seemed like things was not being done until I called for the 1st 2months. When I called Thats when I would find out information was needed. That was mind blowing to me. I was in disbelief that a company knows info was needed and would not contact me. I felt like Kassleman did not want my business. I was frustrated I ask to cancel this project twice. Then he would give info and move things along. After my solar was installed I found out my system will never achieve its max output because inverter is oversized. When the inspector came he wrote down I had a 5k system. My paper work says I have a 6k system. Customer should not be given that type poor communication. Especially when the customer is being as helpful as they can be. I got whatever info needed they day I was informed. My excitement I had for going solar was ruined. I’m satisfied now that it’s actually completed. Kassleman solar should communicate better.

Response from Kasselman Solar

Hello, Thank you for posting this review and letting us know about your experience. We always strive for 5 star reviews, but also want to know where we can improve and when our clients don't have that "great experience." I can ensure that all systems are properly sized and Engineered according to manufacturers specifications. It seems to me there's questions regarding the AC inverter sizing vs. the DC solar system sizing which someone will reach out to you and explain. Also upon reading your file, I can see where the "lack of communication" is and we will work with the employee on further training of proper follow up and communication methods. Thank you again for letting us know about your experience and ultimately we hope you enjoy your system as we did our best to design the most efficient and productive system based off your needs and solar available access.

Never resolve the issue

They finished the solar panels installation for my house around 6 weeks ago. Since dayone one of the solar panel is not working. I tried to reach out to them few times but they said we are working with support and will get back to you. Now they stopped responding at all. I was about to get the solar panels from a different company but these guys convinced me to go with local companies only but this is unacceptable at all. I don't recommend this company to anyone. I think i may have to get this repair done on my own even it has 15 years warranty.

meh.

meh. The positive, Customer Service was great, always quick responses. Install, when it happened, was quick. The negative, lack of communication. Suggestion for Kasselman, create a page for customer to visit to see project status and updates. Was not expecting 3 months to complete project and still unclear whether this will qualify for the 2020 tax credits. Here's hoping! All for a very expensive, and thus far, poorly working east facing solar system. Real world results, underwhelming. If your roof is east facing, think again before installing solar. The 7.125 kWp system they installed for me will well below the 6,946 kWh/year (+ or - 10%) quoted in my Solar Proposal. The last 30 days saw 45 kWh produced...or on a cloudy day like today 885 wH...not even enough to cover running a single small space heater for the day. Granted the summer months should see better results but at this rate 45 kWh x 12 months = 540 kWh...well shy of the 6,946 kWh/year (+ or = 10%) pitched. Lastly. If using their financing connections there may be additional charges for NSEA and VSECU accounts/memberships as well as costs to the utility company for power generated prior to net meter install. If I had it to do again, I would have stayed with DIY.

We Had A Great Experience With Kasselman Solar!

From start to finish we had a great experience with Kasselman Solar. Our salesman, Dave, explained all the local, state, and federal incentives—not to mention how 2019 is the last year for “NET Metering” which is big reason why this is a great year to buy solar. As soon as we decided to go ahead, the Kasselman crew kicked into gear by developing our engineering design, obtaining the Town approval, and coordinating with National Grid. The entire process from our initial phone call to commissioning our system took less than two months. All the relevant documents and signatures were handled electronically which made the process totally painless. Our project manager, Allison, has great communication skills and kept us informed every step of the way. Finally, our installers (Cody, Josh, Jason, Ian, Derek, Tim, and others) took great pride in their work and gave us a very CLEAN installation.... Looks great and works perfectly. Highly recommended.

Great design, great installation, great project management and great follow-through after the sale. We couldn't be happier.

Kasselman Solar

My wife and I recently decided to go solar. After meeting with multiple solar companies we decided to go with Kasselman Solar. They offered the best product at an extremely competitive price. Our salesman Adam Jordan was fantastic. He gave us a clear understanding of exactly what was going to happen throughout the process. After we signed with Kasselman we were turned over to Brandon LeFevre one of the project managers. He basically took over from there, and was with us all the way through the install and start up. All in all the entire process was much easier than I could have imagined. Kasselman essentially does everything for you. Oh, and we are going to save thousands of dollars on electricity. I would recommend them to anyone looking to go solar. It’s easy, the tax incentives are great, it’s good for the environment, and they were extremely attentive to any and all questions or concerns we had.

Kasselman provided great service from Adam (sales) to Allison (project manager) to Brian and his team of installers and electricians and Mike ( installer supervisor). I had a 6.76 kWh ground mount installed and was thrilled with the outcome. Very professional company that answered every question and dealt with all the paper work regarding permits and NYSEG supplier. Had 5 different quotes , most competitive price and I wanted to deal with a local company, not a national installer. I did the research and I know I made the right choice.

My wife and I chose Kasselman Solar after a LOT of research. Our Salesman Stephen Clemens presented multiple options based upon my homes southerly exposure and answered all of my questions both at the time of our meeting and virtually every day after until we made the decision to move forward! Everything from the rebates as well as financing options were explained to us and also detailed on our proposal. Brandon LaFevre was our Project Manager and handled all the permitting, install scheduling, inspections and installation of our Enphase Envoy install. Brandon did an awesome job keeping us informed of the project status and educating us on how to use the monitoring system. Installation took about a 1 1/2 days and I can't say enough about the installers and elections, they were all very professional. Absolutely nothing bad to say about the entire process and very happy that we chose Kasselman Solar. Highly recommend.

Recent install in Albany area

I had been interested in converting to solar for a few years, did my research and decided I was interested in doing business with Kasselman. We found David T. at the Home Expo in February. We were immediately impressed by his knowledge, his charisma for the industry and willingness to answer even the silliest of questions in order to help educate us on the process. We had spoken to some other companies about solar in the last few years, but David's approach was exactly what was needed. Educated, but not pushy. He was relatable and a great first impression for the company. We signed a contract a week later at the end of February and began working with Allison P. on the project. What a great service the team provides: contact information for financing options, handling all paperwork for local permits, Federal and State credit and a liaison with National Grid. I appreciated all of the little things Allison did to keep us informed. She has great energy, very informative and was an absolute pleasure to work with. Everyone was so professional. Our whole project was completed in less than 8 weeks, which was a shock for us! Given the time of year and then the late snowstorm, we are so excited to be generating energy before summer begins! We couldn't be happier with the experience, and have already referred family and friends.

Kasselman solar were wonderful

We finally got solar on the roof. Kasselman solar (518) 478-8365 installed the panels a few weeks ago, I turned on the breakers and Brandon LeFevre came out and set up my system. Kasselman solar were wonderful. They helped with the application for NYSERDA. If you install solar you can get low interest funding and State and Federal tax rebates. The crew leader was a young man named Jared Brown, he had worked on BP clean up in the Gulf of Mexico. He told me it was 140 degrees and they could only work for 20 minutes at a time in Hazmat suits and then had to cool down for an hour, but they never really cooled down. One of the workers died from heat exhaustion. Now he works in solar installation in hopes his three year old son has a future. The new panels can work with shade. We had planned to put solar on the roof for years, now with individual microinverters I finally got it done. I encourage you to call before the new administration and congress get a chance to remove all the subsidies. If you call mention my name. Every time the sun shines I smile that I am finally part of the solution, even if it is only a little bit.

These guys/gals are the best!

I researched solar installers for years before installing. This was because I had to wait to replace my roof before installing solar. Kasselman was my choice before I was ready, and afterwards, I know I was right to choose them. They took care of EVERYTHING! All I had to do was arrange financing, and they sent the links for that. I filled it out, emailed it out. They did everything else. Adam (sales) was the best salesman I've ever dealt with. He was there for the ENTIRE process, even 6 months later to mail me a referral check, after one of my friends installed with Kasselman. Jillian was also wonderful, also there through the whole process. The installers were very professional and nice. The inspector commented that Kasselman's work is very good, and he never has any problems with them. The guys who installed my gutters remarked at how well the construction was of the solar panel rails. Absolutely no problems/complaints. These guys really are the best. Research before you install, then call Adam, and you'll see that I'm right. And just a disclaimer here: I don't work for Kasselman, nor does anybody that I know. This is an HONEST review/assessment of Kasselman Solar.

1 YEAR LATER- how it works with the electric company

This is an update to a very positive review I posted for Kasselman Solar last year. I am still very happy with my installation, have had no problems- the panels just sit there and produce electric. So I had a 5,775 watt system installed. The 275 watt panels best production was about 256 watts. The system produced 7,518 KWH's last year. My meter went from 374 KWH to about 98,848 KWH over the year. (A little confusing. It goes backward, but when it hit 0 it started counting down from 10,000). The electric company doesn't keep track of my usage anymore; they only know what is added or subtracted from the grid. I use the My Enlighten App to get the energy produced during the billing period, then subtract the surplus reported by the electric company from the amount the panels produced. (I don't know how you would keep track without the App.) Every year on the anniversary date, you square up with the Electric Company. Either you owe, or they owe you. Yay!!!- my panels produced 1525 KWH's more than I used. It would have cost me about $300 to buy that much electric from Central Hudson. Booo- I got a check for $28.28. I thought the amount would be 1/3 to 1/4 of what I would pay. Oh well. I bought a system that produces 110% of what I normally use. All of the solar companies interviewed said that you don't get much for that excess production. Still, I wanted a buffer, in case I use more electric than I have historically. Also, not sure who profits from it, but I am putting some green energy into the grid at a really cheap rate. All good.

Kasselman is top notch

Kasselman Solar did a fantastic job installing our new solar electric system. I highly recommend them to anyone that is considering a solar install. They don't do solar leases which, in my opinion, look great up front but are only good if you have no other options. You will save more by buying your system outright. And if you have to sell your home, the installed system will be considered an asset instead of a liability. Everyone that I worked with at Kasselman was excellent. They were on time with everything and actually installed the system ahead of schedule. The original timeline was for the system to be installed in six to eight weeks after the contract was finalized. They actually did our install a little over five weeks from the original arrangement. Kasselman employs electricians for their main business. During our system install, there wasn't enough room in our old main electric panel to do a 'side line tap'. So they replaced my entire main panel including all of the breakers and didn't charge anything extra! I offered to pay something extra as I know this was a hugh expense and a benefit to me. They refused to accept any additional money for the extra work! I can't say enough about what a great job they did. They exceeded all of our expectations! Our old system was installed by GroSolar: We already had a 4.59k solar system installed nine years ago. That system provides about half of our electric needs for each year. The old system uses two string inverters to convert DC power to AC power before it feeds into our main power panel. They did an excellent job on that install as well and it still performs very well today considering it is using the older technology. Our new system that was installed by Kasselman Solar: We added another 5.41k system in May of 2016. The system utilizes microinverters on each of 19 - 285 watt SolarWorld panels, made in Hillsboro, Oregon (USA). This newer technology allows each panel to operate independently and operate on different plains. This means the panels can be at different angles compared to other panels. If there is shading on one panel, it doesn't impact the output of other panels. This was a big consideration for us because our old system was installed on one roof all together. Our new system has panels on different roofs, facing in different directions and at different angles to the sun. The electricity is converted to AC, by a microinverter at each panel, fed to a central box and then into our main electric panel. We can monitor our system on our phones. Also, Kasselman monitors each panel individually and can identify any panel issues remotely. The system has been running for almost a month and our electric meter is flying backwards! Adam Jordan was the main person I worked with to get my contract finalized. He and everyone at Kasselman are top notch! Between our two systems, we should get about 100% of our electricity from solar every year!
