Suncommon's Improper Installation Caused a House Fire
Suncommon burned our house down and won’t give us a refund for their improper installation. My husband and I purchased Solar Panels from Suncommon at the end of 2021 and they were installed in March of 2022. On May 24th, 2023 a fire broke out where the solar panels were connected to our electrical panel, causing such extensive damage to our home that we were displaced for over a year while the entire house was basically rebuilt. After a three-month investigation (slowed down by Suncommon’s lawyers), it was determined that Suncommon improperly installed our solar panels, causing the wiring to overheat and start the fire . We are finally back in our home, but we are still paying off the loan on those panels that sit on our roof doing nothing, while also paying our electric bills because Suncommon will not refund us for the panels and installation. We’ve been given estimates telling us it will cost between $7000 and $9000 just to remove the panels from the roof, and Suncommon has not only wasted our time and money with depositions to avoid payment, but they also declared bankruptcy and requested a “stay” in our case. This company is awful and they’ve put us through hell. We are just praying that they do the right thing and reimburse us.

2023 review: Suncommon just finished a roof mount installation on my pole barn in late January. They provided recommendations in the design phase of the pole barn so this has been in the works for quite a while. They actually redesigned again as they started due to the high winds that we get on the hilltop site. They are focused on doing it right even though this slowed them down. January install provided challenges as well but safety was first on icy metal roof. And, big in my book, an absolutely neat work site. What fun to have all my heat pumps and heated floors going and still see the meter spinning backwards. Experienced local crews, electrical and install, made for an easy (for me) experience. Would definitely use again. 5 STARS for 2023! Update 2025 Well, things change. I have never left a negative review for anything, but since I left this glowing review in 2023, I felt I needed to update with my recent experience so to not lead people astray. I naturally went to Suncommon again in the spring of 2025 for additional panels to get to net-zero. However, the person assigned as my contact did not respond to emails, I had to ask him to respond, and he took six weeks to get me a quote. H said that the lead time would be about 45 days. So, based upon my past experience, I accepted. After approx 45 days, in mid may, I asked for an update. He said I was still in the design queue and the install estimate was now the end of summer. I was very disappointed and reopened the project to others. I signed a deal in a week with a competitor for a better price. It was installed 4 weeks later and I am up and running with a system total of 67 panels. I sent them a note a couple weeks ago stating my concerns for their business and as a chance to respond, but they have not. Since I understand that they are no longer locally owned perhaps this is what happens. So, ZERO STARS for 2025. Shop local.

Customer Service
Some of the worst customer service I have experienced in a long time. I have been trying to get a technician to look at my system for the last 2 months, still haven't gotten one. They take days and sometimes a week just to answer an email. I am currently an extremely unhappy SunCommon customer.

Don’t expect timely service or support
After less than a year after our installation was complete our system failed and stopped generating during peak season for generation. It’s now been offline for Almost two months and we can’t even get a time scheduled for someone to look at our system. Their priority seems to be new customers and not supporting current ones that they already got heir money from. Please consider other true local options or be at risk of paying for something that does not work.

Beware of Terrible Service after System is Installed
When your solar system goes down, will SunCommon be there for you with responsive service to get you back up and running? My experience says no. My pricey 40 panel system went down and I have been trying for the past 14 days to get SunCommon to send a service technician. Communication has been terrible and I still do not have a date/time for a technician service visit. I guess the technicians are being sent out to install new systems rather than service existing customers. How will you feel about your big investment in solar if you can't generate any power during a peak period? Pick a solar company that cares as much about customers after the sale as before. SunCommon has not been that company for me.
Response from SunCommon
We appreciate your feedback as we continuously work to improve and uphold high standards of service given COVID-19 business impacts and restrictions. Despite staff reductions, we've launched a new remote phone system and service scheduling platform, and perhaps most importantly, we hope to continue to do better by our customers. I'm happy to report that a technician visited your home today and we'll continue to work with you to ensure the issue you're experiencing is resolved to your satisfaction.

Scammers full of lies
They talked my exwife into a lease from one there solar fields they own. They looked at her use and gave her a quote of 165 a month she bit, now she gets a bill from gmp of 180 to 200 a month and a bill from suncommon for 165 because her leased pannels produce a whole 20kw and she uses 180 wow what a deal. They lied and said her system would produce more than she uses and she would seldom receive a bill from gmp. Never has the pannels come close to her usages. Going to go to legal aid and file a law suite. They prey on the poor and elderly do not use these thiefs.

Solar Installation
The process started oh so well. The Project Manager was very knowledgable and informative, providing some good insight to the process and the federal and state incentives. Note that the Project Manager is just a name for a sales guy. Once I'd signed, I never saw him again. Hudson Solar took so long to get going, that I had to apply for the EnerBank loan a second time. This has impacted my credit score ! The installation crew were very good to deal with. Friendly and polite. However, following the install, Hudson Solar did arrange for the first inspection. It was left to me to arrange the Town inspection, but strangely Hudson Solar called to confirm the town inspection I had scheduled. The system has been operational now for four months. So far so good, but not once has anyone from Hudson Solar followed up to ensure everything is OK. I also just found out that to get consumption data in addition to the solar energy production, I need a consumption meter. This was never raised in any prior discussions, so something that provides the much needed reporting of overall energy usage is an priced option rather than being a standard element - something I think most people would want. I've been quoted $650 for installation. There are 3rd party devices that are now coming to market for home owner install that are less that 50% of this quote. If I had my time again, I would not select Hudson Solar.
Response from SunCommon
We have reviewed the customer complaint and are in communication to fix the consumption monitoring issue. We are thrilled to hear that his system is producing power as promised and that the installation went well. Please stay tuned for an update. It is our goal to try to make our customers happy and leave them with full peace of mind.

Do not use Hudson Solar
I am a customer of Hudson Solar. Due to lot line issues, I had to move my panels. HS originally gave me a bid of $6000 for the job, which was considered unusually high by construction profesionals. When I lost a zoning appeal and had to move the panels, becoming captive customer, HS raised the price to $6,900 saying the original price was a " ball park" figure. In addition, I had also asked for a quote to increase my number of panels. The cost was aproximately $26,500 which after rebates was around$15,500. However, thesalesman said that a new tax rebate was in the works. One month later, the salesman said that the new rebate was enacted. He then submitted a bid for $33,152 which after the new rebate and credits was $15,308. He said that the original panels were no longer available and the new ones were larger (6% to 10%) and, in any case, the final cost to me was about the same as before. It is apparent that HS was adjusting their products and pricing to keep the new tax rebate rather than passing it on to their customers. Finally, HS uses a 35% tax rate to calculate its breakeven. My experience shows that my real breakeven is about 14 years rather than the 7.5 projected by HS. I would not use HS again and strongly suggest comparison shopping before engaging Hudson Solar.
