Terribly unresponsive when issues arise

I contacted Certasun at the beginning of April to have panels installed. The panels were installed with a couple of hiccups, the biggest one being that, once installed, the system was sending an error message in mid-July that Certasun still hasn't come to the house to address. They have been incredibly unresponsive in general, but especially with respect to this. They finally booked a time to come out but then rescheduled for a week later, saying the work order had been assigned to the wrong team. The system problem must be addressed before the utility interconnection can be established so that I can earn kWh credit from ComEd. At this rate, it won't be until October before I can start to accrue energy savings. I work in ComEd's clean energy group and am often asked for solar vendor recommendations. I won't be recommending Certasun, based on their lack of responsiveness.

Certasun, in my opinion, way overpromised in getting me live before the Federal Tax Credit expired. I signed with them July 2025 and got installed March 23, 2026.They did credit me several thousand dollars because I went forward with installation once it was clear I would be losing out on the $14K expected tax credit. I definitely experienced months of stalling tactics that were just flat unnecessary before even starting prep work. (installing smoke detectors inside my house and a costly move of electric mast by 6 inches) As others have stated, communication is well below satisfactory levels. I had good communications from one project manager, however she left the company right when Certasun showed up to finally install. Her replacement is off the charts poor. Installers were fantastic except for they really failed to commission the system with me present to understand what to expect going forward. The system seems to work well 3 months in, but I still have not gotten a thorough follow up to check on things right now and to plot out future rebate timeline. There are plenty of regulatory steps along the way, and I can give them credit for managing that process with ComEd and State of Illinois. I was impressed with them during my research phase, they won me over right as I almost signed with another company. From there, it was delay, delay, delay. Installation is excellent, communications and providing realistic timeline - unacceptable.

Great Start Poor Finish

Certasun did well during the install process. However, after their relationship with SunPower ended because of bankrupty of SunPower they have started treating us like strangers. Don't answer questions truthfully, give you the run around and poor response. Per the Contract THEY are responsible for the warranty of the system. They sold SunPower panels to us. In fact, they called them the BEST and They need to stand behind it. The APP to monitor the one's system is now being charged at $99 per Year. Ridiculous fr Certasun to say that is part of my ongoing cost. I am not paying for something that I have given over $50K for. CertaSun WILL NOT stand behind you based on my experience SO please save yourself some trouble. The CEO is a Booth graduate and should understand what Customer Service should be like. A dissatisfied customer will talk to 10 other people about their experience.

Satisfactory when good, horrendous when bad

*this review will be updated* This may be an OK company to work with at some point after all of the dust settles with their previous, exclusive systems supplier, SunPower. When we got the system installed originally in November of 2023, everything was rather smooth. The buying process with Certasun and a 3rd party lender was somewhat cumbersome since everything wasn't handled in-house but it wasn't unlike finding your own lending solutions for other large purchases. Our system worked as-advertised and out-performed specs during the early summer months--a common expectation during long, sunny days. Until one day, I noticed our system seemed to be hit-or-miss. My customer experience (CX) in dealing with post-sales support has been horrendous. Our system has had complete, catastrophic failure going into its 4th consecutive month (as of the author date of this review), we have had 2 separate crews from Certasun out here to reaffirm proper installation. Then they have the audacity to give me an excuse that the power supplied from ComEd is outside of spec (how can they explain that when it's the very same supply ComEd was providing us and those around us earlier?). Now, I'm here waiting on 2-3 day response times to emails to their customer success manager (Bill Wayne) and owner of the company (Josh Lutton) on copy. It's pathetic and such a shame because I contracted with CertaSun due to a handful of recommendations from nearby neighbors in Grosse Pointe Village--their systems are several years older and must've been using batches of equipment prior to SunPower's downfall. I have requested that our system built out of the defunct SunPower panels, inverters, monitoring equipment, etc. be replaced with their latest vendors to which they've declined to respond to in any of my inquiries. It won't be long until I build a case to bring against the firm.

Response from Certasun

Kim, We aim to exceed customer expectations, and we are sorry we’ve let you down in this regard. We think you are presenting an unfair version of events here. What you describe as a “catastrophic failure” was a temporary suspension of energy production, for which we have already compensated you. We have and are making all reasonable efforts to ensure your system operates as intended despite the difficulties presented by SunPower’s bankruptcy.

Fed Up

From excellent to barely mediocre

I had CertaSun install solar panels a couple of years ago and had the best experience, above anything I could have expected. The sales portion answered all my questions, and I had considerable questions from my research leading up to my contact with them. I couldn't have expected a better experience. However, now, about a year ago, I wanted to add a SunVault battery for storage. My sales contact was slow to respond, didn't seem to want to answer any of my questions and I had to continuously keep after him to get to where I am today. I ended up going to the original sales rep, who was promoted, to get any kind of answers. I was so deep into it by then, I struggled with it, but decided from my first experience to proceed. Now, SunVault installed and operational for a little over 2 months and there's a problem with it. It's been 2 weeks since I was told I'd have answers for availability of the defective/non functioning part and still no response from the 2 emails I've sent. No one seems to know if or when the replacement part will be available to bring my storage to where it should be. IDK what happened, but CertaSun went from a company I would recommend to everyone, to a company I'm fed up with and hate the thought of having to deal with them again for anything. No communication from the team onsite, little or no communication from my "success manager", so here we are. I work far enough away and have to make arrangements for them to access the equipment, but cannot do that when I have no information or timelines.

Response from Certasun

Thank you for the feedback. Our goal is to provide the best service in the industry and we clearly did not live up to that standard here. Our technician did not resolve the issue with your system during his first site visit, but our partner, SunPower, was able to resolve it remotely the next day. Your system has been working as expected since then. While our technician was onsite, he did find some anomalous readings on one component. Although not impacting the performance of your system now, after consulting with SunPower we would like to proactively swap out the part under warranty. The part is on order. When it arrives we will make the replacement at your convenience. We apologize sincerely for not being as responsive or communicative as we should have been. We have already made some changes internally we hope will allow us to do better in the future.
