Update to previous review (10/3/22)

After nearly a year, my system is finally working as advertised. During this past year Generac identified that one of their solar panel parts was defective and needed to be replaced. Those replacement parts were finally made available and installed in my system in early December. I cannot fault A1A Solar for installing the faulty parts so I am changing the previous rating to 3-stars. IF you plan to go solar, which I still believe in, and you contract with this company I have a couple of recommendations. First, be proactive in learning about the system you order and don't be afraid to contact the manufacturer (in my case Generac) with questions. If you have an issue with your system, stay in touch with the contractor until it is resolved. The company owes you that until the system operates as advertised. A1A still needs to work on their communication with the customer.

Frustrated!

MISLEAD AND FRUSTRATED!!! My family was looking into solar panels and found A1A. Our neighbors installed solar panels with them, so we inquired about the product and fell in love. We had been researching solar power for many years and finally decided to "bite the bullet" so to say. The installation was wonderful and the personnel were very friendly. However, when we decided to get the solar panels we needed to get a loan to help finance. OUR CANVASSING MANAGER said this would be no problem because the government had an incentive program that would pay off the loan with no interest for 12 months, one of the two loans we needed (one with interest over 12 years and one with no interest for 12 months) once taxes came out. THIS WAS A SHAM!!!!! While reading through our tax preparations, we only get 1/3 the amount needed THIS YEAR, and receive the rest the following year. This was NOT how the product was promoted by our canvassing manager. They calculated the total we would get based on the total 30% incentive program, which still exists, but FAILED MISERABLY TO MENTION, "oh by the way, even though I am saying you will receive the entire 30% incentive at one time when you file your taxes this year, that is not the case. You only get 1/3 this year and the rest next year." So now, we were expecting to get a check from the government as our incentive for the total price of the loan, but only get 1/3. Very frustrated and upset about the CALCULATIONS, MISREPRESENTATION AND OUTRIGHT LIE which now sticks us with paying for most of a loan we were told would be covered by the incentive, now with interest. The fact we have to pay the loan isn't the problem, our issue is the loan has been building interest since we received it and we didn't pay because we were told the incentive would cover the cost and we could pay it back INTEREST FREE before the 12 months was up! But now, with only 1/3 of the total 30% coming to us, we now get stuck with the bill AND interest.

Response from A1A Solar Contracting, Inc

Part of our sales process is to request from the owner the total amount of taxes that are owed each year so we can ensure the 30% tax credit is about the same or less than the total federal taxes owed. We are sorry this was not adequately revealed in your case so we could have restructured the financing accordingly. Occasionally we have customers that owe less in federal taxes than the solar tax credit they are eligible for various reasons. For most people, this is not the case. Remember, a tax credit is essentially a discount on the taxes that are owed. For example, it the solar tax credit is worth $7,000 and the total taxes owed is MORE than $7,000, there is no issue in being able to exercise that full value of the tax credit that same year. On the other hand with the same $7,000 tax credit and the total taxes owed is only $4,000 then you can only exercise $4,000 of the credit the first year and carry-forward the remaining $3,000 tax credit the following year. If this rare situation happens, customers can either pay out of pocket the difference to pay off the short-term loan to avoid interest, re-finance the amount to be carrying forward to next tax year, or as last option, pay the interest on the loan.

We do care about our customers and try to avoid these financing/tax pitfalls. We have to rely on customers letting us know what their tax situation is so we can ensure this does not happen. To find out how much your total taxes owed are, Line 63 on IRS form 1040 will provide this number or ask you tax professional. Please call our office if any further clarification is needed on how the solar tax credit works and the various financing options available.
