Now that home solar power is becoming more commonplace in many US states and in some concentrated areas, solar plus energy storage and its additional benefits are becoming more important. Some of the nation’s biggest residential solar installers are recognizing this and are leading the nation in offering combined systems, a new Navigant Research Leaderboard Report found.
The company analyzed the offerings and strategies from 12 of the nation’s larger home solar vendors that also offer energy storage options and found that among those Sunrun leads the pack. The company is followed by Tesla, which was the nation’s largest solar installer when it was SolarCity, and Vivint Solar.
“Sunrun has focused on leveraging multiple roles through turnkey services or strategic partnerships across the project delivery value chain to drive down costs and enable financing innovation to increase customer acceptance and participation,” says Ian McClenny, research analyst with Navigant Research. “Additionally, Sunrun utilizes a comprehensive energy storage software platform that analyzes business cases based on local markets and optimizes customer or grid service revenue streams.”
Energy storage is becoming more important, particularly as certain areas of the country see more distributed solar energy installed. Energy storage systems offer more benefits than solar systems alone, both for the homeowner and the utility. Recognizing the importance of this even some Senators have proposed a tax credit to promote energy storage systems.
A home system with energy storage can store electricity for use in the home when it’s needed most or can sell energy back to the utility when it offers higher prices. Such systems can also help reduce fluctuation on the electric grid, reducing the needs for utilities to invest in transmission and infrastructure upgrades.
Each of the companies in Navigant’s study have developed their own solar-plus-energy storage systems. With most partnering with other suppliers. However, Tesla also manufactures solar panels and batteries through its partnerships with Panasonic.
Navigant said that though Tesla and Vivint illustrated “solid performance in terms of sales and market acceptance,” they trail Sunrun in terms of market vision and production strategy. The other leaders in the marketplace, in order, are E.ON, SunPower, Sunplug, Sunnova, Huawei, Soligent and ZEN Energy.
The leaderboard looked at 12 criteria in rating leaders. Among them are the companies’ vision, go-to market strategy, partners, production strategy, technology, geographic reach, product performance, product portfolio, pricing, staying power, as well as their sales, marketing, and distribution, and product quality and reliability.Tweet
