Humanity has just about a decade left to significantly reduce its emissions before the impact of climate change becomes more drastic if not irreversible, according to a report by 91 scientists from around the world. Renewable energy is one of the best ways to reduce emissions and another report showed it’s expected to provide a third of the world’s electric needs within about five years. In the meantime energy storage is becoming more important and corporations are helping lead the way in renewable energy.
Last week the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a special report, Global Warming of 1.5°C, penned by 91 authors from more than 40 countries. The report found that if humanity wants to keep global warming to 1.5°C, it must stop most emissions within the next 10 to 14 years. The report said that emissions levels must fall 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030 and reach ‘net zero’ levels around 2050 to keep climate change at bay, which, the report found, is possible.
At roughly the same time the International Energy Agency (IEA) showed that renewable energy like wind and solar power, are making strong contributions to reducing humans’ impact on the earth. In its latest Renewables 2018 market analysis IEA anticipated within the next 5 years renewable energy will supply roughly a third of the world’s electric needs. With more support from governments and companies renewables could grow 25 percent higher.
Companies are already leading the way in terms of using renewable energy. For instance, Microsoft was named as the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) leader in its Green Power Leadership Awards 2018 for increasing its use of renewable energy by 36 percent in the past year. Other leaders this year included Anheuser-Busch, which plans to be 100 percent powered by renewable energy by 2025.
One of the things that will help renewable energy spread more is the adoption of energy storage. New analysis by Navigant Research shows that in the residential segment three of the nation’s biggest residential solar installers are also leading the adoption of installing energy storage. The leading companies are Sunrun, Tesla, Vivint Solar, which are increasing their efforts to market and install energy storage with solar panels.Tweet
