Last week JinkoSolar announced that its now producing solar panels at its facility in Jacksonville, FL. Meanwhile Home Depot patterned with Sunrun and Vivint Solar to sell rooftop solar and energy storage in stores in more than 20 states. One of the world’s biggest manufacturers, 3M, is also going 100 percent renewable.
The Home Depot, one of the largest if not the largest home equipment supply company in the US, has now partnered with Vivint Solar and Sunrun to sell rooftop solar and energy storage systems in at least 23 states and in roughly 700 stores. Sunrun will be The Home Depot’s leading solar installer and will offer services in 15 stores, building on its existing relationship with the company. Vivint Solar will offer services in eight additional states.
JinkoSolar is the latest Asian-based solar manufacturer to open a manufacturing facility in the US. Last week it announced that it is now producing solar panels at its facility in Jacksonville, FL. The company partnered with NextEra Energy to purchase up to 2,750 megawatts of JinkoSolar’s photovoltaic panels over the next four years. NextEra Energy also owns Florida’s largest utility, which has plans to install 7 million solar panels in the next four years.
One of the world’s largest chemical and manufacturing companies, 3M, has joined RE100 and will move to 100 percent renewable energy. The company, which makes, among other things Stickies and Scotch tape, began by moving its headquarters to renewable energy last week. It aims to move to 50 percent renewable energy by 2025 and will increase its renewable energy use after that.
In Hawaii, the state’s biggest utility the Hawaiian Electric Companies (HECO) announced that fully 27 percent of its energy came from renewable energy in 2018. It would have generated more from renewable energy last year, but a geothermal plant was inoperable for part of the because of the Kilauea volcanic eruption. The utility will install more solar this year to meet its 30 percent renewable portfolio standard requirement in 2020. On some days renewable energy provided well over half of the energy generations needed. For instance, on April 14, renewable energy provided 80 percent of the electric demand on Maui.Tweet
