Solar Subject Matter Expert
In August 2019, my wife and I signed a contract with Design One Group LLC (D1G) solar company out of southwest Virginia. In November, D1G installed an insulation package, a Sun Bandit solar fed hot water heater and a 10 panel solar grid. The grid was switched on in January 2020. Our electric bills from 2019 showed we used about 34,000 kWh. In April 2020, I contacted D1G stating that we were not seeing any savings or reduction in our electric bill. From April 2020 through June 2021, the vendor did nothing to resolve my issues. During that time, I engaged a couple other solar venders to assess my installation. Two vendors stated that I was way overcharged for the installation that I received and there was no way that configuration would come anywhere close to the savings that D1G promised. The problem was none of them were willing to testify in court. That is when I found Solar United Neighbors of Virginia on Facebook. They helped a lot and steered me to Bernie Stanley, President of Shockoe Solar, here in Virginia. I wish I had found Bernie before. I spent hours on the phone with Bernie explaining the details of our solar nightmare. Bernie listened patiently, asked questions and provided feedback. Bernie impressed me with his experience and professionalism especially compared to that of D1G. D1G had proposed several iterations of “fixes” but refused to provide me with an estimate of the impact on our current bills. Bernie took each of their proposals and put it through his solar planning tools. As I expected he showed that the “fixes” D1G suggested would not come close to making our solar installation right. I hired Bernie as an expert witness in a law suit I am bringing against D1G for fraud and violation of the Virginia Consumer Protection Act. With Bernie’s broad experience in the solar industry and his reputation for bringing shady solar companies to justice, my lawyer believes we have a very solid case. I could not have reached this far had it not been for Bernie Stanley and Shockoe Solar. I highly recommend that you contact Shockoe Solar and Bernie Stanley for any questions you may have regarding solar. You will not come to regret it like I have regretted ever coming across D1G. good prices and high quality, but what really sets Shockoe apart from other company`s is their willingness to explain any aspect of the solar setup that you have questions about, their warranty, and their willingness to do the little things (like fix a shingle while they are on the roof)

Ask a lot of questions, Bernie is always willing to take the time to make sure you feel good. Don`t be shy to make sure you get exactly what you`re looking for. Just make sure you do some solar research before reviewing the designs so you know what the heck you`re looking at. I await the day that federal incentives aren`t artificially inflating the costs of solar. Yes the feds gave me 30% but if the incentive wasn`t there, the market price would be 30% lower anyway and everyone wouldn`t pay higher taxes/incur more debt to subsidize solar.

Bernie was a welcome change from our usual experience with contractors. No surprises, no mid-job price-increases, everything that was promised was delivered.
