I would recommend finding someone else, if I could do things over, other than Powell Davis to do any work for me. I went into contract with Mr. Powell Davis in April of 2018 and the project was suppose to be completed within about 3 months. It is now October of 2019 and I still do not have a working system. My contract stated that I was to receive Canadian Solar panes and the panels that I received are JA Solar. I reached out to Canadian Solar and they were unfamiliar with Appalachian Energy Solutions, and it appears that the JA Solar panels are a cheaper panel. I would recommend doing a background check on Lawrence Powell Davis if considering hiring him. I have hired an attorney and filed judgment against Mr. Davis , but I do not have high hopes of recovering any of my money spent. I also hired another company to come and look at completing the project and was told that the panels would need to be removed from my roof and reinstalled. I was told that they were installed incorrectly. Since the strips were glued to my shingles, the shingles could be damaged when strips are removed, and if that occurs then I would be looking at a new roof. Hiring Mr. Davis has been the biggest mistake I have made in years and has costed me dearly. Update. I had to get someone else to finish wiring in the panels, do all the paper work myself and now my roof is leaking where the panels were installed. I uploaded a picture of damage.

This is a review of Lawrence Powell Davis / Appalachian Energy Solutions installation of my solar energy system with battery backup. In summary, I would not recommend Lawrence Powell Davis / Appalachian Energy Solutions to handle any of your solar work. My install was contracted in late 2018 and was supposed to be completed within 3 or 4 months. Mr Davis could not complete the job until February 2020, more than 10 months late. I did receive substantial discounts on the contract due to the delays, but I would rather have had the project completed sooner and with better workmanship. As the project dragged on, I had to call Mr. Davis nearly every business day to follow-up on his immediate or past due commitments. It was like managing a teenager. Deadlines were discussed and agreed. And then the deadlines were missed (repeatedly) and mostly without advance notice or proactive follow-up by Mr. Davis. I can't count the number of times I heard Mr. Davis tell me "later today" or "tomorrow," only to have those promises become "next week" or even later. The end result was that even with my almost daily nagging, the project took more than a year to complete. As I mentioned, the quality of the installation work itself was average or poor - and there were some aspects that were worse. Examples of the poor workmanship include the following (to name a few): 1. Major issue: The utility external disconnect switch was just a cosmetic shell! No fuses installed in the outside box and the disconnect wires simply lying loose in a DC junction box in the ceiling! There is simply no excuse for this dangerous condition. 2. Major issue: Battery would not discharge to power backup loads. This was due to a disconnected wire that I had to track down and fix. 3. Major issue: Short in DC wires coming from one array. I had to pull 180 feet of replacement wire. 4. There were many minor issues - too many to detail here. But one is worth mentioning. The 4 mounting poles for the solar arrays were installed too close to each other given the width of mounted panels. This resulted in partial shading of 2 panels late in the day. This could have been completely avoided with a simple measurement. I'll need to move one mount to another pole to eliminate the shading. Of course, Mr. Davis won't return any of my calls or texts, so I had to pay someone else to fix these aspects of the installation. It wasn't a lot of money, but it was very annoying. I would not recommend Lawrence Powell Davis / Appalachian Energy Solutions to handle any of your solar work.

Appalachian Energy installed a solar system for us in November of last year. Our solar can provide us with backup power ( Which recently came in handy) as well as providing power to our home daily! This is a second home for us currently but we plan to retire here in the next five years and wanted to have all of our ducks in a row. We consulted with three other companies before choosing Powell and Appalachian Energy Solutions. They had one of the best prices and the components that we wanted. They took care of everything for us after we signed our contract. Our system went in without any issues and had been working flawlessly. Installation took them five days and inspection was passed the first try. I would recommend them to anyone and have. My cousin is having a system installed by them in February now as well.

Appalachian Energy Solutions installed a 9 km grid tie with battery backup for our vacation home in March of this year. Powell and his crew did an outstanding job throughout the entire process. They made it as easy and painless as possible. We had a similar system installed at our home in Florida with quite a bit more trouble. If only Appalachian Energy Solutions installed in our home state! We would recommend them to anyone looking for a solar installation.

Lawrence at Appalachian Energy was great to work with, him and his staff they extremely knowledgeable, and professional. They took the time to educate us on the entire installation process and the workings of our solar panel system. We have been saving over a hundred dollars per month and couldn't be happier. Would reccomend Appalachian Energy Solutions to anyone looking for a solar Installation.

Savings & Backup

Appalachian installed a 8 kW solar installation for us in November of 2018. The system has greatly reduced our electric bill as well as provided us with power during three power outages. Having power security for future inflation and all types of outages feels great! AES was easy to work with and very responsive and knowledgeable. Andy was able to answer all my questions in a way that was easy to understand. The solar was installed very neatly and they kept the jobsite clean

Run in the other direction as fast as possible

Finally fired him. After 14 months, finally got someone else to finish job. This guy is a disgrace to the solar industry. I hope no one else gets screwed by him. No one else wants to pick up his pieces. I’m having a very difficult time replacing him. I’m very disappointed.

I had Appalachian Energy Solutions install a Solar system on top of my roof just before the first of the year. My wife and I met Powell and Luke at one of the local festivals and found out the solar power setup they were selling was unlike any we had looked at before. It fit our needs, and within a week or so they came to our house to assess options and give us a quote. We settled on a battery back-up system with panels that takes care of about 40% of our electrical needs, giving us a daily break on city-provided electricity and an emergency backup when needed. Solar isn't cheap, but neither is the constantly rising cost of electricity, especially with all the coal plants under attack by the current administration. However, we were able to work with Appalachian Energy to design the system that would work best for us. After parts arrived, installation was completed professionally within 3 days. The system has been working perfectly since then and our power bills continue to drop as the system gets settled in. Today we had the perfect example of why we bought the system. We're pretty far out on the end of the electrical distribution grid and high winds brought a power outage. I can only guess why, but I didn't even notice the city power was out until I noticed the clock on the oven (the oven is not powered by our solar setup) was out. Further investigation showed city power had died, but our furnace, TVs, computers, satellite Internet and more was still working. Had I not walked through the kitchen it's likely I would never have known the city power was off until we decided to cook dinner. These guys can do it. They have lots of options on setting up systems to meet needs. I have found their responsiveness and quality of work to be outstanding, and the system they installed is exactly what we needed. I'd recommend AES to anyone without hesitation.
