My experience purchasing a solar system with Venture

The good things: The sales team was very responsive and not pushy like some other solar companies. They were able to answer my questions about different options (leasing, purchasing, financing). The installation of the panels was quick, as were obtaining city permits (which may be a function of the city as much as the solar company). The technology itself is high quality and we are happy with it. The bad things: (1) Communication: Venture project managers were absolutely atrocious with correspondence. You could almost never get a hold of them on the phone without having to leave an voicemail, they would only correspond via text message even though I told them I preferred email, and they would only send one or two messages per week (never more than one text message per day), so getting questions answered from them would take weeks. Often times they just wouldn't acknowledge your question at all. They did not keep us in the loop about what the status of our project was. For example, it can be kind of complicated to get net metering, because there are multiple forms that need to be submitted and filled out. You may even get permission to operate your system from the utility, but that doesn't guarantee you for net metering eligibility. I ended up having to submit some forms on my own to guarantee my eligibility, because Venture neither did this for me, nor informed me that I would have to do it. I ended up doing a lot of research on city policies and Eversource requirements to make sure my system would get net metering. (2) Not thorough in electrical work: We failed the inspection by the city 3 times, which significantly slowed down our permission to operate because the city inspector was only available like once a month. The electricians were sloppy, cut corners, and so we required them to come back and finish things in order to pass the third inspection. (3) Transparency: The company failed to provide me an invoice for my project even I had paid for 100% of the costs. They also did not give me copies of the permits they had acquired for me from the city. I had to inquire for these things about a week after I made the final payment. It was almost as if they considered their job to be done because they had taken the last payment from me...they provided no closure for me as a customer at the end of the project. I had to ask for the invoice, copies of permits, etc. This seems ridiculous, as any coffee shop will automatically give you a receipt for a $5 coffee, but this solar company didn't think to send the invoice and permit paperwork to a customer who just dropped $25K to purchase a system from them. Overall, I definitely would not recommend them if you can go with a more reputable company. At the end of the day, our system works and we are happy we have it, but I grew a lot of gray hairs working with Venture.
