We hired Best Energy Power to install a solar system on our co-op building. What followed has been one of the worst contractor experiences we’ve ever had. From the very beginning of the project, the owner, Ronnie Mandler, was a nightmare to deal with — combative without provocation, dismissive, disrespectful, and consistently unprofessional. Communication was difficult from day one, and any attempt to ask reasonable questions or request documentation was met with hostility. During the project, DOB issued a Stop Work Order. Although the immediate safety issue was corrected, Best Energy Power never obtained written confirmation from DOB that the SWO was lifted. Despite this, they resumed work anyway, completed the installation, and even closed out their permit while the SWO was still active. Years later, we discovered the SWO was still open in DOB records. When we contacted BEP asking for documentation proving it had been lifted, Ronnie again insisted the issue was “resolved” but refused to provide any proof, and when we pressed for answers, they completely ghosted us. When we tried—in good faith—to clean up the DOB record ourselves, the City issued a violation and a $16,000 penalty for work performed during an active Stop Work Order. BEP has refused to take responsibility, despite the violation arising directly from their actions and despite contract language requiring DOB compliance and indemnification. We are now being forced to hire lawyers and pursue legal action to recover penalties that should never have existed. This is time-consuming, expensive, and entirely avoidable. We regularly host tours in our building for other co-ops considering electrification and solar. We were already warning people to be cautious about working with Best Energy Power well before this happened. Now we are unequivocal: DO NOT WORK WITH THEM.
