Elite

SunPower has for some time been the leading brand of solar panels in terms of efficiency and electrical specifications.

Originally, the solar panels were made in America but over recent years cost cutting measures moved production to Mexico and Malaysia. The secret of SunPower has always been that they held patents over their “Interdigitated Back Contact" solar cells, known as IBC solar cells. IBC cells are the currently most efficient solar cells in mainstream production.

In 2020, SunPower as we knew it split into two separate listed entities, SunPower and Maxeon Solar Technologies. From now on, Maxeon will make the solar panels, and SunPower will run a retail dealer network selling integrated solar and energy storage solutions. However, the demerger has raised more questions than it has answered. Who actually owns the cell technology now? And will SunPower now start selling panels made by other manufacturers to reduce the cost of their systems?

The official reason given for the demerger is to allow each company to follow their strengths, but a skeptic may say that the real reason is that the manufacturing side of the business is unprofitable and is facing rising competition for other Tier 1 solar manufacturing companies that are now making solar panels very close in efficiency to the Maxeon/SunPower panels, all while using cheaper cell technologies. In short, it appears that the Maxeon spin-off is really about getting out of the manufacturing business before it lost its remaining competitive advantage, i.e. its leadership in cell efficiency.

Our concern now as a reviewer of the SunPower and Maxeon brand is that the contractual relationships between Maxeon and SunPower are not clear and Maxeon, as a standalone public company, is losing money. This factor has caused us to downgrade the overall brand "bankability" of SunPower and Maxeon. Their panels are still excellent (although now only marginally better than many other Tier 1 brands) but we don't know what happens if the Maxeon entity goes broke and we’re not sure if the 25 year warranty is being backed by Maxeon or SunPower.

They work really well!

I added 19 panels to the shadiest facet of my roof and they have exceeded my expectations. They are sensitive and powerful, and look great!

Disastrous - avoid at all costs

Wow. Hired Sunpower June of 2021, and they came out to inspect before assuring me they could install and have power on quickly. They installed wrong, it doesn't work and I have 2 roof leaks with damaged shingles, and water damage to drywall. No target date as to when they think the panels might work, few responses, no returned calls. Hilarious. After working my way through a bunch of incompetent folks, Jeremy Bull offers to uninstall it all but only if I first indemnify them. Hilarious since obviously they lack the competence to complete a simple install, so can't imagine them fixing things right It's been 9 months as of writing this! Interviewing counsel now. SunPower Solar....1 Year later

We have absolutely no regrets going solar. We feel we chose the best in the business from our system from our research about various companies, products lines, and local installers. Since it was a time in my life I actually had enough money to pay outright for the Solar system my feelings about the value and savings is more likely different than from those who are paying over a period of time for their system. Of course we realized immediate savings and benefits from Solar. The system works flawlessly with the exception of a module that had to be replaced a few months after install. Faulty parts are a possibility with any mechanical/electrical product. The happily surprising thing was the interaction between the Customer Service and myself over the faulty device. The findings were realized and a crew came out to replace the device in a timely manner. As far as the install, and interaction with the local installer, we were also more than satisfied with everything from initial contact, sales call, informative video call and install. The crew were thorough, courteous and quick to install the system. Questions I had were quickly answered by the Phoenix dealer; Greg Field at PGT Solar Solutions. By only disappointment is from the fact that the Battery Storage system is still so expensive. The industry wide issue of high cost for solar storage batteries hits every potential customer of any Solar System. The day the costs come to a more reasonable figure would be a day that I can truly say I am (100%/Plus) satisfied with going Solar! Cheers!

Smooth Installation

The installation went very smoothly. Once connection with utility completed, operation appears to be fine. Of course raining, cloudy weather is keeping the generation from being fantastic for now.

Solar Install

Generally good experience with sun power. However, had some issues with installer, Freedom Solar. Electrician left wires loose in service panel causing AC not to work and plugs in master bath not to work, causing me to call AC contractor to trouble shoot and fix, and resulting in a $143 repair bill. Also, took a while for Freedom Solar to send contractor to repair sheet rock damage. Contractor showed up late in day and did not have enough time for repair to dry for painting. I sent Freedom Solar bills for electrical repair and paint but never got reimbursed for additional costs.

I am pleased with the SunPower system, and particularly pleased with our installer, Sun Pacific Solar Electric in Santa Barbara, CA. They were competent, clear in their communications, stayed right on schedule, and worked with me on the details of our particular installation. I would highly recommend them.

Friendly and Professional

Of the four companies who gave us quotes on solar panel design and installation, SunPower by Precis was the most professional. There was no “hard sell” or vague answers to equipment questions; the sales rep was straightforward, responsive and honest with us. We were able to speak to the design engineer and installation manager also, who were equally as forthright. The installation went very smoothly, and all the technicians were also professional in demeanor and appearance. They told us when the job would be done and explained the process fully. The permitting process and approval could not have been smoother (not always easy in our city!). The system is performing exactly as advertised. I would not hesitate to recommend Precis and SunPower to anyone considering solar.

Easy to deal with

The installer was very easy to work with. I had a substantial delay due to storm damage after the contact was signed. They put off the installation until roof replacement was completed.

One year after installation

I have enjoyed the benefits of the solar panel installation and net metering for one year after going live in March 2021. In retrospect, I should have done it sooner after purchasing my home in 2017. After enduring SCE power bills in summer in excess of $600 and faced with increasing charges I decided to go forward and become a part of the solution rather than the problem of traditional electric power generation. I chose a low interest loan payment and my monthly payment is slightly less than my least expensive power bills I had paid before going solar. If you live in an area with generous yearly sunny days I would seriously recommend conversion to solar powered electrical generation for your home or business.

Peace of mind

We picked Sunpower because they are partially owned by Total, a large French energy company, so they should survive. Also, they do complete installation, so only one throat to choke. Installation was hassle free and professional with friendly installers. The output met our expectations.
