Solar Power Rebates, Tax Credits and Solar Panel Incentives in South Dakota; 2012 Update

South Dakota does not have the following:

  • Any utility or state based up front rebates or tax credits;
  • South Dakota does not have net metering, either on a 1:1 basis or even an avoided cost basis that we can find documented;
  • South Dakota does not have any performance based feed in tariff or other incentive

South Dakota does have a renewable energy portfolio standard but it can be satisfied either by renewable energy credits from renewable generators in South Dakota or out of state. All up South Dakota is one of the real laggards in solar power policy. Fortunately South Dakota residents who are in a tax paying position do have the benefit of the 30% federal tax credit but that is about all. Hopefully there will be increased support in the future for installations of home solar panel systems in South Dakota
