Their name evokes images of Soviet Russia. But they are actually a more modern creation: an international solar company. Founded relatively recently, in 2013, Boviet is a Tier 1 manufacturer that is headquartered in San Jose, CA, but owned by a publicly-listed Chinese corporation.

The company produces its solar panels in Vietnam. When tariffs were imposed on Chinese made solar panels by the Trump administration, many Chinese solar panel manufacturers moved their production to Vietnam.

In terms of specifications, Boviet’s solar panels won’t win any awards. But their panels are available at a budget price, and testing performed by PVEL scored them highly for reliability.

Their parent Chinese company, Ningbo Boway Alloy Material Co. Ltd, reported a healthy net profit of $429 million in 2020. This is some comfort in terms of bankability of the brand, but there is no guarantee that the parent company would continue to support the brand if there were major warranty claims.

There have been several brands of solar panels that were owned by Chinese parent companies that have simply closed down operations in a specific country. While a company like LG or Panasonic could also just close down their solar manufacturing subsidiary, the wider global value of such brands make us think it is much less likely that they will do so. Even if they did, they would probably still honor any warranties to protect the reputation of their brand.
