Complete Solar

I bought a solar system from CSS in late 2011, following a very slick sales presentation from a vice president, and a great deal of pressure to take advantage of a year end special. I was apprehensive about how useful it would be, since I could only put it on a roof with an eastern exposure. I was told that this would not make much difference, and should expect a nine year payback based on their analysis.

While I have actually generated more electricity than the original estimate in 2012 and 2013, I am not coming close to the original savings projection, and realize now that the nine year payback estimate was complete fiction. It did not consider that an eastern exposure generates limited power during peak hours, which are preferentially rewarded by time-of-use monitoring. A solar system can only be cost effective if most of the power is generated during peak hours, and this requires a western or southwestern exposure. So don't let any solar company fool you into buying a system with an eastern exposure, or you will end up feeling very foolish, as I do.

Until recently, the system seemed to be working reliably, even if not cost effectively. But the production for September and October of 2014 were down 6.5% in 2014 compared to the same months in 2013. Since these months had an extraordinary amount of sunlight during the 2014 drought, it seemed that there should have been an increase in production, not a decrease. But so far, Complete Solar will not acknowledge there is a system problem.
