Tesla Energy

My name is Leigh and I write on behalf of my husband who has been a solar city customer since 2012.
I write this complaint to inform solar city that their company, representatives, and service have been dismal and frustrating. I would never recommend this company to anyone, and truly believe this company has failed in many respects. I normally positive things on company websites, but I have had to post a negative rating before for solar city in order to even receive a call back from the representatives or company.

I write n behalf of my husband because he is so frustrated with the service; he no longer wants to communicate with a company who does not communicate with him. I have recently married him and when I came to live in his house after selling my home which I adored, I noticed he had solar on his roof (neither here nor there, one of my complaints is that he is solar is hideous looking on his roof--I have known many other solar companies and clients who are happy with the positioning of the solar panels on their roofs--the solar panels on my husband's roof are positioned to actually be an eyes sore to the aesthetic appeal of his house--not to say that during wind storms, we are concerned that the panels may raise off the roof causing more damage than what I will cite later on this complaint).

My grievance is with the efficiency and speed that this company takes to do business with customers. The first part of this long complaint, which is actually situations and problems compiled on top of one another, is that when my husband first sought out putting the solar city product on his roof, it took 1 whole year in which to have the panels installed. I have heard of wait times due to city ordinances, but to wait a year to even hear back from the solar city folks regarding installation is not acceptable.

When the solar panels where installed, they were not installed properly. MY husband is a general contractor and he has installed roofs on many homes he has built and refurbished. When the solar city employees were up on his roof, they were stomping loudly, jumping from elevation changes on his roof and they left gaping holes where the panels attached to his roof. He told the employees about it on the spot and he was dismissed. When he put a grievance in with the company, he was dismissed as well. One night soon after installation, it rained. He awoke to a large amount of water on his living room floor as well as water leaking from the ceiling where the panels had been installed. He promptly called Solar City back and although they came back, they never correctly repaired the leaks or patched the holes with the proper roofing material.

This roofing fiasco not quite taken care of, my husband would periodically call solar city and explain his problem. Finally as I came to the picture, I decided enough was enough. I thought that either Solar City should fix the problem or they could come and remove their panels. I wrote a complaint letter such like this and left it on the solar city board, which I will do with this as well, in August of 2015. We finally received a call back that week from a solar city representative. The next week he scheduled with my husband to come out to his property to assess the damage.

The representative came and agreed with us that the patches on the roof needed repair, that the inside of the ceilings needed repair and repaint, and that the company was responsible and should pay. For a while in late summer of last year of 2015, solar city representatives seemed to finally get on the ball and try to rectify the situation.

However, late in 2015, the communication became less and less. The company informed my husband that they would pay, but pay a roofer directly. We had no idea why they did not just give my husband a check for the problems so he could fix them. This left my husband with scrambling around to find a roofer he felt comfortable with, that would give a decent quote and that Solar City would give a check to.

As this was going on, my husband also noticed his electric bill began to have problems. For the entire history of the solar panels being attacked to his roof, he only had to pay the panel rental fee. He never had to pay an electric bill and he was constantly credited with his conserving energy use. However in late 2015, my husband noticed his energy bill credits decreased monthly to the point where in 2016, he began paying an 11 dollar bill to his electric company. After calling his electric biller, he was informed that the rate basis in which the electric company paid him had changed. The electric company had changed how it credited unused and sold back electric power from a 1:1 rate exchange to a prorated to commercial exchange, which effectively dwindled his credits and caused him to start paying an electric bill. This, I’m not sure if solar city has any part in changing, especially since we use LESS energy and sell back MORE and still are charged.

The final straw to me has come during this year. Roofers that solar city paid part monies due for repairing my husband’s roof came on the exact day my husband was in the hospital for a minor outpatient procedure. They came without notice, and without Solar City nor the company warning or setting up a date with my husband. Furthermore, communication during this year with the company truly lacked--after trying to reschedule the roofing company, we never heard back from solar city regarding any other roofing repairs. Although a painter came to repair his ceiling and repaint it, some repaint was unacceptable and my husband requested a painter to come back to repaint which never happened.

My husband is at an impasse. I want nothing more than to rid ourselves of the monstrosity on his roof. They look aesthetically hideous, they are somewhat dangerous during wind sto5rms, they are not worth the money anymore, and the roof and ceiling repairs have not been completed, and were not up to par during repairs or installation. I stopped by a solar city representative in a big box store who said he would alert his internal folks to at least call my husband to complete this long standing problem but I take no stock that that will happen.
The company's communication record with us is absurd. if I had to write a scathing compliant letter just to get representatives out to look at his panels before, and communication has ceased again, I’m not sure what I will have to do now to get repairs, funds and just some attention paid to my husband’s roof and panels this time.
Bottom line--my husband and I are extremely dissatisfied with company's poor service, attention to detail, help to the customer and overall workmanship. I think I could have hired beginners to place panels on a flat roof and had a better outcome than this. I would never, and I truly mean never refer this company to anyone. I work for the government and I know if give service like this to my veterans, some of them will die waiting for care, or receiving shoddy and improper care. I do not doubt that others have had success with this company but our disappointments, problems and continued frustration with this company outweighs any positivity I hear. I really want the panels removed and solar city deserves no more money from husband because they do not give any service that warrants such money being paid to them.
