Able Energy Co

I chose Able Energy because of their good reviews and because they were willing to do a smaller installation based on my electric consumption. The sales process was smooth, although not transparent and Able requires 60% downpayment (higher than other companies, I believe). They handled the paperwork well; the installation crew and electricians were very easy to work with and did a good job; the product, as far as I can tell, seems good and is working properly.

But here's the problem: I paid my 60% in December 2014, and the system finally went into operation in February 2016. It took exactly 14 months to install a small residential system. I understood that installation would happen in March when the Minnesota winter allowed. When March came and went without word, I contacted Able and we set up the project kick-off meeting in April. We talked about June installation. June came and went without explanation or notification. I asked again what's happening: we set end of July. That came and went. In August "within 30 days" was stated, but no installation by the end of September, etc. At the one year mark, I threatened to cancel and demanded a full refund, but in then end my (most recent) project manager persuaded me, with apologies, that they could definitely get the installation completed by Christmas. Christmas came and went an installation happened in January, and the electrician's final work and connection was completed in February.

I was told repeatedly that the installation would take one day and the installers wouldn't need access inside the house (so I could arrange my schedule, right?). Nope: it took three days and they needed to get inside the house each day. I was led to believe the trenching to bury the cable line (from my garage roof where the panels were installed to the meters on the house) could be done with the installation. Nope: they laid a temporary conduit above ground and returned in March when the ground thawed to bury the line.

Able requested the balance payment upon receipt as soon as the electrician was done (see, they can be speedy and communicative when needed). I paid 50% of the balance due and stated I would pay the rest when the cable line was successfully buried. They replied that they required 90% payment (now making up new billing rules), but I refused because at 90% payment I had no faith they would return to complete the job. Now that the line is buried they immediately requested final payment (of course) but I'm waiting for the City inspection of the buried line to pass.

Again: good things to say about the product, the installers, the electrician. The repeated, unexplained delays, lack of communication, and poor customer service were extremely frustrating. I sense this is largely a company management issue--and a bad way to run a business.
