As of Mar 2024, the average cost of solar panels in Hopkinton is $2.93 per watt making a typical 6000 watt (6 kW) solar system $12,312 after claiming the 30% federal solar tax credit now available.
This is lower than the average price of residential solar power systems across the United States which is currently $3.00 per watt.
The size of a solar panel system also plays a role in how much the installation will cost.
Larger solar installations will typically have a lower cost per watt, because the panels can be purchased at a ‘bulk price’. However, these larger solar systems will still have a higher total cost, because they are made up of more individual panels.

In our quest to find the best solar option for us at a reasonable price, we were most impressed by Sunergy Solutions and Kevin Cesare’s presentation. We had talked with representatives from several companies, but Kevin gave us by far the most complete and understandable information regarding our needs, the potential cost savings, and the overall procedural steps involved. Having made our choice, we can look forward to Kevin’s being there to answer any further questions we might have.

Before choosing a company, I met with reps from two other solar installer organizations. I was not inspired and decided that maybe solar panels were not for us. Why? I don't know really, but nothing positive happened during our meetings. Nothing seemed certain as to who would install, when, who my contact person would be. It was clear that the person I spoke with in the last meeting was not someone I would be in touch with again. The company wanted to limit the number of panels to 9, (according to law I was told) but I knew I needed more since I planned to buy an EV and an electric stove and a heat pump. Then I called NEC and the company arranged a meeting with Alex Perdue, a man who had lived in my neighborhood years ago and who would become the project manager fo our installation. Alex could not have been more helpful and trustworthy. There was not a bit of pressure, and he had a remarkably positive attitude. He introduced me to Artie Crocker who was assigned as the solar engineer. Artie arranged to have 16 solar panels installed, he oversaw the entire project, was always here to supervise the installation and until this day, after almost a year, he is there to answer any questions I have. I was so satisfied with what the company had done that I decided to install a mini split system. Chris Cardoza was assigned as project manager, and like Artie, he was always available and oversaw every detail of the operation. For both of these guys it seemed like everything had to be perfect before the installers finished their work. I can't say enough about the honesty, reliability and integrity of this company and these 3 men who represent it. It's pretty unusual. I have referred several neighbors to NEC. Two have already installed. And they are happy as well. Yes, NEC gets an A+ from me and deservedly so. Ron

We've have owned our system for almost 8 years and had a Enphase microinverter fail. Enphase sent me a replacement microinverter and the search began to find someone to do the work as the original installers are now in PA. After multiple contacts, I found New England Clean Energy who quickly responded and I have to say, they are terrific! Definitely recommend them if you are a Massachusetts solar system owner or one looking for a new installation. Great communications with a great service team!! The team that came to do the replacement we're extremely friendly, knowledgeable and highly professional. I will definitely call on these folks for any future needs! 5 Star service from start to finish!!

Very skeptical at first probably like everyone else. The sales team with Dylan, answered all my questions from the actual solar panels and equipment to the service and warranty I would expect. He was outstanding knowledgeable and readily available for my many calls. As for the team the electricians Ray and Jarret went the extra mile for panel placement, conduit hidden very well wiring in the attic on a hot day. Both extremely knowledgeable for many more questions. The roofers Jason and Juan were neat did a fantastic job and I am pleased with the appearance. 6 hours installed perfectly. Unfortunately the slowest process waiting for RI Energy to change out my meter. I would highly recommend RTP over anyone else. They truly are a team.

We recently had our solar panels installed on our home and couldn't be happier ! Our salesperson Mike, was knowledgeable and transparent throughout the process. We had met with a few other companies who danced around our questions and just didn't feel comfortable with them. Mike hand held us from start to finish and even helped us hire a new roof crew. Solar is a confusing process so having a company that is willing to walk us through it made all the difference. We are grateful to Mike and can't wait to see our energy bills go down this summer! Mike deserves a 5 star rating from this happy couple !

I highly recommend Sol Power. Every step of the way, they were professional, above-board, and efficient in their planning, installation, and wrap-up process. We even got the installation finalized through the pandemic! Plus they are cooperative, which keeps the money in the community.

The sales process was great. They were very attentive and offered the best deal on the best equipment. Then.. After signing the deal, they stopped returning e-mails and phone calls. It took them 6 months to get the materials delivered. Then it took 2 weeks before installation started. And the meter was installed incorrectly. They corrected that quickly as I was still holding the final 10% progress payment and their sales team was back to calling and e-mailing every other day. 4 years in, one of the micro-invertors stopped working. For 4 weeks, no one at RGS responded to my calls; e-mails; or web-chats. I initiated the replacement part request with the manufacturer and the next day RGS e-mailed me back to say a replacement part had been ordered and should be arriving in 2-4 weeks. I got the part in 4 weeks, notified RGS, and, again, they went silent on me. 4 weeks after that, I got an e-mail from RGS with a workorder stating that I would have to pay $350 plus additional costs for them to complete the work under warranty. That is where we stand now. If I had to do it again, I would go with a company that had positive reviews after the sales process. That is when you are going to need them they most. Good luck with your solar projects.

Where there is no specific pricing information available for a brand then we have used state pricing data for that brand.
Solar panel manufacturer | Avg. cost per watt |
---|---|
Canadian Solar | $2.73 |
LG Solar | $3.26 |
SunPower | $3.42 |
Panasonic | $3.30 |
LONGi Solar | $2.64 |
The most important difference between buying solar panels and any other purchase is that solar panels last 25-30 years. This is a long, long time and you will need customer service over all that time. The reviews below of the two largest corporate solar installation companies indicate larger corporate solar companies are not delivering this support to their customers.
We recommend you find a small or mid-size, local, family-owned solar company. These companies tend to care more about you and your specific job. You don't want to be on hold to a corporation's call center for the next 25 years!
The cost of solar doesn't just include the equipment and installation costs - it’s also made up of permitting costs, inspection costs, and installer profit margins.
These different components are what make the price of solar fluctuate between installations. Some of the factors that affect solar power system installation costs for specific homes include:
Homes that use more electricity will need more solar panels to cover their energy needs.
Although solar panels do get cheaper on a per-watt basis, the overall cost of the system will increase as more panels are added.
But, the higher a home’s energy usage, the more solar panels can save the homeowners on their energy bills.
The price of solar panels can vary depending on the type of solar panels you choose.
There are two main types of solar panels for residential solar installations: monocrystalline and polycrystalline. Monocrystalline solar panels tend to be more efficient and more expensive than other solar panels. Polycrystalline panels have a lower efficiency rating and come at a lower price point.
The type of inverter you buy will also influence the cost of your solar system.
You may see some solar quotes with prices that seem too good to be true.
If you get quoted for a ridiculously cheap price, the installer might be using low-quality equipment or an unsustainable pricing model. You want to use a solar installer that is charging enough so that they can stay in business - as you’ll be relying on them for the next 25 years!
It’s important to make sure that your installer is giving you the best quality at the best price possible. This is why getting multiple solar quotes is so important.
The overall cost of solar can be influenced by the solar incentives available.
Across the U.S., homeowners can apply for the federal solar tax credit. The solar tax credit makes installing solar more cost-effective by providing homeowners with a tax credit equal to 30% of the cost of their installed solar panel system.
Local solar tax incentives and rebates can end up saving homeowners thousands on a solar installation, especially when they’re used with the federal solar tax credit.
See what solar incentives are available in your area by using our solar panel calculator.
The cost of installing residential solar panels in Hopkinton varies with the brand of solar panels and inverters you choose, the installation company you choose to install them, the relative ease or difficulty of installing solar panels on your home, and of course the amount of solar panels you need. The amount of solar panels you need is, in turn, related to your energy usage.
The table below shows the data extracted from a real life quote delivered through the SolarReviews marketplace recently for a fairly typical home in Hopkinton.
As you can see the payback period is relatively short and equates to a much better return on investment than he historical returns that have been available from investing in things like shares or property.
