Firstly, no solar contractors can pay to get listed at the top of our search results.
The order of our list of best solar installers is displayed based on a formula balancing reviews number and reviews score only from the last two years. If a company has a lot of reviews and a higher average reviews score, but is below another company in the list, it is because most of their reviews are old and the company above them has more reviews at a better average reviews score in the last two years (even if overall they have fewer reviews or a lower all time average reviews score).
We show all solar energy contractors that have received reviews of solar panel installation work they have done in Union Hall even if they don't have an office in Union Hall. There are a lot of renewable energy companies in the solar industry in the United States that service areas in which they don't have offices via contract installation teams. Some of these companies receive a lot of complaints (see the big national installers reviews like Vivint Solar, Sunrun and Solar City), but others have really good reviews and so we don't exclude them from our top solar companies lists. They often bring price competition to smaller cities where the local solar companies are so busy they need to put their prices up. It is up to you how much weight you put on a local office when choosing between solar companies.

My wife and I used to install solar systems in the Tidewater Area. Knowing the benefits of solar, we decided to find an installer in the Sutherlin, VA area that would design and install a system that would eventually greatly reduce our need for expensive rural electricity at our retirement home. Main Street Solar of Roanoke was that company. They were very professional, polite, and knowledgeable. They provided all the requested specification sheet, etc. for us to know exactly how our array would perform. They also went out of their way to please two engineers that are particular about aesthetics. The owner, Andrew is a man that can be trusted. Ask for him, for your installation, you cannot go wrong.Great work! Can't wait to see that small electric bill!... read more

We decided to take the plunge into solar at the end of July. Living in a community with a Homeowners Association (HOA) we needed approval before the installation could begin. We mention when because the next monthly meeting of the appropriate HOA committee was in early August. We contacted Nova about installation and had every question answered without any pressure or offers of "if you contract right now" sort of thing. We signed the contract for installation with Nova Solar on August 5th, and they had the appropriate drawings and specifications to us for presentation to the HOA the next day. That enthusiasm and understanding of our needs immediately saved a month for the project. The HOA approved the project, but solar is still new to some organizations. Our county building permit took nearly two months to approve; thankfully Nova Solar stayed on top of the bureaucracy and kept us informed. Once the building permit was issued Nova Solar was all over our roof and completed installation (20+ panels) and electrical work in one day. After that, it was paperwork again with Dominion Electric and the County Permit Inspector - Nova Solar took care of it all and kept us informed of the progress. Finally, all the paperwork was complete, and we flipped the switch three months after signing the contract with Nova Solar.Nova Solar took care of every detail and kept us informed. The team exudes enthusiasm for doing the job and doing it right. We recommend Nova Solar as your go-to for solar information and if you go that route for installation. You don’t have to get on the roof or deal with bureaucrats – Nova Solar does it all and does it well!... read more

We reached out to eight companies for our project. We received quotes from all of them except one (who insisted that my wife and I both be present to suffer through their two hour sales pitch).I asked a lot of questions and proposed all sorts of ideas to each of the vendors. Some of the ideas were legitimate and some were completely crazy. Only one vendor advised me against doing my crazy ideas – Trent Taliaferro said, “I’d love to sell you a bigger system but there is no way you will get your money out of it. It just doesn’t make sense to do that.” All the other venders were going to sell me things they knew I did not need. That is why I selected Trent/Teakwood.They were not the cheapest but they were below the average of the rest. Nearly a year later, I am still very pleased with their service and quality. Here is our system: https://enlighten.enphaseenergy.com/pv/public_systems/ZLjA1119551/overview?preview=1... read more

Here's the short: You may save a few hundred dollars with another competitor in the area -- but we're talking about solar panels here which means you're spending a few thousand bucks at minimum, probably closer to $12-15,000 though realistically. My point is, don't waste your time shopping around to find the best price -- everyone in the area is going to cost about the same so go with someone who has the best reputation and experience. IPS of VA has been around since 1993 which puts them ahead of their competitors by a long shot. They went above and beyond to answer all my questions related to the solar technology in layman's terms that both me and my wife could easily follow. They installed our system in less than a half a day and it's been almost a year now without a single problem.... read more
I went with this company because I liked the fact that it was a small family company that had been in business for a while. The owner, Charles, seemed to really know solar and was excited to be in the business. Once the contract was signed and he had the large down payment, he disappeared. He was bad at returning calls, and worse at showing up when he said he would. During the installation, the panel installers had no knowledge of electricity and the electrician did not know much about the panels. A year later, I still have two panels that were supposed to make my barn off-grid that have never worked. I got many promises to fix it, but have heard nothing at all in several months.... read more

So, to start with, on the first engineering drawing I got, the power meter was shown in the wrong place and the pitch of the roof was wrong. They corrected in a couple hours but said in the end that it wouldn't make a difference. They got the permits and got to install sooner than expected. The crew showed up and started working. a couple hours in, I get informed that they cant place the panels how they were originally designed so they had to move some of the panels to a different area. The "engineer" that they called stated that it would not effect production either way. When they returned the following day, they told me that they couldn't blow the insulation because my attic was too tight and had air ducts in it and that the insulation wouldn't allow the a.c. to work correctly which is obviously verifiable b.s. because it actually makes it work more efficiently. They ended up blowing it in anyway. They "completed" the job. They told me that I would be contacted soon about county inspectionSeveral days had gone by and I hadn't heard anything so I called and find out that it hadn't even been scheduled. As a matter of fact, I was told that I could schedule it myself if i wanted to and i did. Powerhome stated that everything that is needed for the inspection is in the permit package. The next day, the inspector showed up at the door and asked for pictures that were taken during the installation, which I didn't have, so they failed the inspection. I called powerhome and they stated that the crew that did the install had lost the pictures and that they would schedule someone to come out within a WEEK OR SO to take new ones and the reschedule the inspection. This wasnt good enough for me. I got on the roof and took pictures myself and rescheduled the inspection and it passed. I sent the paperwork into the power company myself because I knew powerhome would drag their feet which I was actually wrong because they sent the paperwork the following day. This was about the only acceptable thing about the whole process. The power company came out and swapped the meter the following day.In the midst of all of this, I had called them because, upon later inspection, I determined that I had been majorly shorted on insulation. They had blown just enough to make it look good from the attic opening but not nearly what was promised considering there were several areas that were untouched. I called and the scheduled a crew to come out a week or so later. Less than 2 days after the system went active, it stopped working completely. This happened on a Saturday afternoon. I called them the following Monday morning and told them about it. They tried to run tests and ended up calling Solar Edge(the inverter manufacturer) and they said it was faulty and to replace it. I asked them to schedule that for the same day as the insulation and they did. The morning of the day that they are supposed to come and fix things and blow more insulation I called to verify the appointment because they didnt call me and I needed to know when I needed to be home. They didnt confirm anything about replacing the inverter so I brought it up. They said there were scheduling issues and that the crew doesnt have one with them so it would have to be rescheduled. I was a little hot a this point so I demanded that they figure it out and make it happen so they ended up having someone bring the inverter to my house and drop it off ahead of time. The crew somehow got delayed and didn't show up until after dark that day. They said they can do everything in the dark except pair the inverter with the optimizers. They said that the office would just go ahead and do it in the morning. This didnt happen. I had to call and wait on hold and then call again and I finally got someone to tell me that they couldn't communicate with it so they had to send a technician. I went home that day and paired it myself and also repair the zigbee communication device with the inverter that wasnt done right to begin with. Finally after being down for about 5 days. Everything started working again. I noticed in the Solaredge app that the layout of my system wasnt shown correctly and the arrays were all mixed together. The serial numbers were not put in solar edge correctly so therefore there was no way to tell exactly which panel is which. They told me that they would have to charge to come out and fix it. I argued it because it was obviously their screw up. Eventually they scheduled an appointment to get the serial numbers as well as find an optimizer that wasnt working. Only 17 out of the 18 panels were working. They come out to fix it and the first person that shows up is confused about the fact that he had to get the serial numbers. I called the GM in Richmond and the called the guy and clarified and sent him help. In the process of doing this, they scratched the hell out of at least 1 of the panels on the front of the house. I noticed the following week that the array on the front of the house was sagging in the middle and I called and asked them to just move the scratched panel to where it cant be seen and figure out why it is sagging. They fixed the sag and moved the panel. They didnt update the record to therefore the monitoring platform is still screwed up again. At this point my production is less than half of what was promised when it was sold. They state that I have to wait 3 months and then send electric bills. I told them that at this point, my electric bill isnt their business. What is their business I making sure I get the PRODUCTION I was promised which I am not. The electric bill doesnt show the production. I'm not concerned about the percentage of my power bill it takes out. I just want the production that I am supposed to get because I have done several other things to minimize usage that they shouldn't be able to take credit for. At this point, the only thing I want is to get the production I was promised or to get my money back. I'm not even so sure I even want one of there people back at my house to do anything else half a**ed if you know what I mean. Do not to business with this company. You will be sorry you did.... read more
