The first carbon neutral automotive dealership in the world is Cleveland Ohio’s Motorcars Honda, which was recognized by British Petroleum (BP) for the achievement last week. Among other efforts the company installed a 335 kilowatt solar array which produces roughly 70 percent of its energy usage. It also is offsetting not only its own carbon footprint but that of every vehicle it sells.
"We are eliminating the carbon footprint for every new & used car sold, all of our employees’ cars, parts truck, rental cars, shuttle van, and the owners personal travel tied to work,” said Trevor Gile, managing partner at Motorcars Honda. "Five years ago, we never thought that we would be going down this path," he adds, "but as our employees became more involved and concerned with the environment, we started to learn about some of the various options available to help.
While Motorcars Honda is the first dealership to achieve this status, it’s not the only one that’s greening its image. Both Ford and Chevrolet have supported the use of solar power at their dealerships through separate programs. Car manufacturers also are partnering in interesting way to help increase the amount of solar used not just in their manufacturing but also that of their customers.
Since then it’s installed the largest single covered solar structure at a dealership in the country which was made of steel recycled from other vehicles. Its other efforts include installing an energy efficient LG VRF heating and cooling system as well as LED lighting fixtures.
All of this has led to the dealership’s ability to offset all the emissions its business generates and more. “Not only do we offset all of the emissions we generate by electricity consumption, but also the emissions of our rentals, our shuttles, our parts truck, our staff’s personal vehicles, and every car we sell. BP has scrutinized our entire operation to determine definitively that we are truly carbon neutral,” the company said.
BP awarded Motorcars Honda at Wade Oval in University Circle, announcing it was the first automotive dealership in the world to achieve the distinction. However, the dealership also has achieved other distinctions for its sustainability efforts. It was one of 10 dealers in the country to receive the Environmental Leadership Platinum Award and won the 2015 Ohio Business of the Year award from Green Energy of Ohio.Tweet
