Last year Tesla made a splash when it announced that it and SolarCity were introducing a solar roofing product that actually integrated solar cells into solar panels. Now GAF, one of the largest North American roofing materials company in the US, is getting into the solar roofing business with its DecoTech Roof-Integrated Solar System.
"Affordable, effective, and visually appealing solar has been one of the most talked-about promises in the roofing industry," said Anthony Ruffine, GAF vice president of renewable energy & strategic marketing. "We are very proud that our DecoTech product fulfills that promise."
The company unveiled its new DecoTech System at the International Builders' Show (IBS) in Orlando, FL, showing that even traditional roofing companies see the advantage of incorporating solar power directly into rooftops. Its new product uses a low-profile racking system with solar panels and features that include microinverters and more. The company partnered with multiple suppliers for equipment.
"GAF received a tremendous response to the DecoTech System at IBS," Ruffine added. "We heard from established solar contractors who want to add the DecoTech product to their line, as well as roofing contractors who see the potential to build their businesses with an innovative offering that integrates smoothly with their existing business.”
As a roofing company, GAF is used to designing products that can be installed by roofers. "The DecoTech Roof-Integrated Solar System will make it even easier for many of our factory-certified roofing contractors to offer affordable solar power to their customers," Ruffine explained.
The company also is ensuring that its products can be installed by “GAF Solar Elite Contractors.” Contractors that are certified to install roofing as well as the GAF solar arrays. “Each GAF Solar Elite Contractor is also certified as a GAF Master Elite Roofing Contractor by GAF,” the company explained.
It’s not the only roofing company that’s gotten into the business. PetersonDean has been installing solar power for a number of years.
However, the systems from PetersonDean and GAF use traditional solar panels. The new solar panels from Tesla actually integrate solar cells into roofing tiles and blend them into rooftops so it looks like a traditional rooftop.Tweet
