Sungevity and partners completed the first phase of a commercial microgrid that includes a 832 kilowatt solar installation. The microgrid was installed at the Ram's Hill Golf Course in Borrego Springs, CA, and is expected to save the course $300,000 annually, generating a return on investment in eight years.

Microgrids are able to work independently of the larger electric network and can essentially island themselves if the electric grid experiences failures. They’re also key to implementing renewable energy in developing nations where there is no national grid infrastructure. They’re unique in the ability to integrate and balance power from multiple sources like wind, solar and more. In the case of Ram’s Hill, it’s using the solar system by Sungevity. Other partners include developer and CleanSpark, which is providing secure energy monitoring and management software.

Earlier this year CleanSpark was purchased by Stratean, which has developed a gasification technology into a syngas that can replace other fuels.
The system at Ram’s Hill has distributed controls and allows plug and play capabilities for users. The microgrid was designed to incorporate more functionality in the future and could include energy storage or more energy integration. The second phase of the project is expected to allow the system to fully island and will include 800 kilowatt hours of energy storage.
