Last week, Vote Solar and its partners announced a new program in Colorado’s front range, which allows homeowners in Denver, Boulder and Adams Counties access to discounted solar arrays and Nissan Leaf Electric Vehicles. While many cities and counties across the country are working with solar companies to offer group-purchasing discounts, the ability to also purchase an EV at a discount—an up to $8,349 discount—as an option might be a first.
Vote Solar, a nonprofit organization partnered with Sunrun, cities in the region, and Boulder Nissan to make the unique offering. If 500 people register for solar power through the group purchasing offer, the solar panels will cost $3.50 per watt. That amounts to a 15 percent savings over the average installation cost, includes permitting fees and a $500 incentive rebate (a Visa gift card), according to Vote Solar. That’s also before the 30 percent Income Tax Credit incentive kicks in, too.The installations will include REC Group solar panels and SolarEdge Inverters. People who successfully refer others to the program will receive a $350 incentive as well. The deal will be offered as far as 75 miles outside the target zone, but it may add over $1,000 in travel costs.
The other part of the deal is the ability to purchase a $31,810 to $36,363 Nissan Leaf for between $23,461 and $27,749. That’s before the roughly $12,500 in state and federal tax credits for purchasing an EV kick in. Making the cost of a more than $30,000 car less than $11,000.
This is latest group purchasing offer in Colorado and it comes at a time when the state’s largest utility, Xcel Energy, has largely reduced its incentive programs for residential programs since the state’s residents have enthusiastically added solar to their homes when they could get higher incentives from the utility. According to Vote Solar in 2012 and 2013 nearly 1,100 employees of large companies in the front range region participated in pilots of the group purchasing program installing more than 900 kilowatts of solar power.
If 500 or more installations result from the campaign in 2015 the threshold for savings will be met. Homeowners have until Oct. 31 to sign up for the group solar discount and people can purchase or lease a Leaf until Sept. 30 through the offering.Tweet
