The California State University system is going big on solar power. It’s been adding in solar power in large amounts across of its campuses. Now it announced it’s latest project, a 4.8 megawatt solar carport at its Long Beach campus, which is expected to provide roughly 15 percent of the campus’ electric needs.
“CSULB is proud to support California and the nation in our transition to clean and renewable energy sources to fight climate change and its negative effects on our students, staff and community by increasing our reliance on solar power,” said David Salazar, associate vice president of physical planning and facilities management.
Moreover the system will also help the university control its electric costs.
When completed in 2017 it will be one of the largest solar carports in the US. The carport will use SunPower’s Helix design and will cover two university parking areas. The installations will also include 50 electric vehicle charging stations. SunPower said that one year of the power produced by the arrays could power more than 2,200 electric vehicles for 30 years.
The university will purchase the electricity under a power-purchase agreement that is cost-competitive with power from the grid at this point. “With the cost-competitive solar generated by our SunPower systems, the university will control electricity costs and reduce our carbon footprint, serving our goal to achieve climate neutral operations by 2030,” Salazar said.
These solar carports are the largest new solar installations on the Long Beach campus, which already has three solar arrays, and will actually be the largest system in the 23 campus California State University system.
The California State University system plans to be climate neutral by 2030. As such it’s adding in more renewable energy, becoming more energy efficient and taking other actions to reduce its impact on the climate.
The other major state university system in California, the University of California, also is reducing its use of fossil fuels. It’s boosting the amount of solar power it uses. Last month it announced that it’s now receiving 60 megawatts of solar power from the Five Points Solar Park and plans on getting 80 megawatts of power from solar.Tweet
