Sungevity (Residential)

Review I posted on Yelp. After the review, I was contacted by the customer experience manager who really wanted to see how they could improve the experience. They seem to genuinely care about the process.

The whole solar experience was an interesting one. What I found was an industry that's still figuring it out, and there are a TON of players, so it's really hard to tell if you're making the right decisions.

Anyways, I went with 5 stars here, but there were hiccups. We ultimately decided to go with Sungevity after talking to 3 vendors. Solar City came to the house, but was very poor in follow through, and there was a component where they really wanted us to sign a form so they could have somebody else come out to verify the first person's estimates. After refusing to sign a form (I don't sign anything unless I'm sure), they never followed up. We also got a quote from a local vendor but ultimately decided to go with a bigger company as this was a 20 year commitment, and I really didn't want to depend on 1 person if something happened 10 years from now.

In any case, we went with Sungevity for a couple of reasons: 1) price, and 2) their salesperson, Andy McElroy, just did a better job explaining the process. He was patient, and we never felt pressured to make a purchase. We ended up pulling the trigger because Sungevity was looking to make a number during a quarter end, and were willing to negotiate on price at that time.

Now, the installation process, as others have mentioned could be a little frustrating. You do get calls at various times from different folks (engineering or Project Management), and that can throw you off at times. However, my biggest complaint would be at the time of installation is that after the 3rd party contractor is done, and they schedule time with the electrical company to get sign-off, you hear nothing for days. So, for me, waited a week after the final install. At about a week, I got an automated email from Sungevity indicating that Solar was on. During that week, I called 3 different people from Sungevity asking for an update, and no one returned my call. I found this just frustrating especially when they hit my credit card with my full charges during that time. If you're reading this, Sungevity, have YOUR PEOPLE RETURN PHONE CALLS!.

Well, bottom line, a month in a half after install, I have a $10 electrical bill last month during one of the hottest months of the year. I also have a credit with the utility company and should get some sort of refund, I hope, at the 1 year mark of solar installation. As I look back, despite the hiccup, Sungevity did a good job (their 3rd party contractor was especially nice), so I thought I'd share my experience.
