Today, April 26, AT&T and SunPower announced a new partnership under which the companies will co-market SunPower Equinox home solar systems this summer. They’ve also partnered to deliver connective services for SunPower’s Equinox systems through the Internet.
There have been a number of interesting sales partnerships in solar power over the past few years, from nonprofits like The Sierra Club partnering with RS Energy and Imagine Energy to sell solar panel systems to homeowners to co-marketing agreements with The Home Depot or Lowes. Heck Ikea is even selling solar systems at its British stores.
But this is the first time a telecom company has partnered with a solar provider in the U.S. Since solar power systems are increasingly tied to the Internet and AT&T provides Internet of Things (IoT) services the partnerships are not that far-fetched.
"Our IoT solutions help customers remotely monitor cargo, homes, vehicles, containers and also —solar panels," said Mike Troiano, vice president, Internet of Things, AT&T.
"Connectivity is changing how companies operate. We're thrilled SunPower chose us to give them near real-time insights into how their solar energy solutions are performing for their customers and the tools to help manage them remotely."
The companies will jointly market SunPower’s Equinox system to homeowners. The recently released system is the solar company’s newest residential offering, which is designed to reduce a solar array’s visual impact on a home while producing as much power as possible.
As an IoT AT&T will work with SunPower to wirelessly connect its solar arrays with SunPower’s data systems. They plan to connect at least 100,000 solar electric systems over the next two years. “The technology collaboration is designed to reduce onsite homeowner visits by allowing SunPower to wirelessly support solar power systems as needed and in near real-time,” the companies said.
"Through this IoT collaboration and innovative marketing with AT&T, we are making solar even more mainstream," said Howard Wenger, SunPower president, business units. "By incorporating AT&T IoT technology into SunPower's solar energy solutions, we are enabling a future of solar energy management that is reliable, simple, and cost-effective.”Tweet
